Moebius ( Korean : 뫼비우스 ) is a feature of South Korean filmmaker Kim Ki-duk from the year 2013 . The film celebrated its world premiere on September 3, 2013 at the 70th Venice International Film Festival . In Germany, the film was shown for the first time on October 3, 2013 as part of the Hamburg Film Festival . Without regular theatrical release, the film was released in Germany on February 11, 2014 on DVD and Blu-ray .
The film completely dispenses with dialogues and concentrates purely on the film language and film semiotics . Moebius is the third film by Kim Ki-duk, after Amen and Pieta , which deals with Christian symbolism.

At the center of the plot is a betrayed wife who, in revenge, throws a brick into the business of her husband's lover and then tries to amputate her sleeping husband's penis with a knife . However, since he can successfully defend himself, she cuts off the son's penis instead. While the father is taking his son to a hospital, the mother leaves the house and wanders aimlessly through the city. After returning from the hospital, the father tries to remove his penis with a revolver , but breaks off this attempt exhausted. Instead, he is surgically emasculated . Then he breaks off the relationship with his beloved. On the way home from school, the son is mocked and humiliated by classmates. His father rushes to his aid, but is later rounded up by the students.
The son goes to the beloved's shop. This bares her breasts in front of him and lets him caress her timidly. When she tries to grab his crotch, he runs away. On the Internet, researched the father after the transplantation of penises, but must resignedly conclude that so far no progress has been made in this area. When the son visits the business of his beloved again, he also meets his classmates who had previously humiliated him. They tried to pull his pants down again, but were beaten up by a street gang and put to flight. The father continues to look for ways to achieve orgasm without a penis. Meanwhile , the street gang rapes the mistress and the son, who has to watch helplessly as the men put on the woman, is asked to assault her. However, he only fakes the rape process.
After the police arrest the son, the father tries to make it clear to the officers that his son is unable to rape anyone. He tries to open his pants, but out of shame the son knocks his father down and can only be persuaded by the police to reveal himself. In the house, the father tries to kill himself with a revolver, but breaks down in tears. The son ends up in jail and the father looks again for a way to satisfy the sexual desire. He found what he was looking for on a website that compares the sensations of pain and pleasure ( The Whole Body is Genital ). During the night, fellow inmates tried to rape the son. A prison guard, however, can prevent worse things and puts the son in a solitary cell. Stimulated by the new knowledge, the father tries to create pleasure pain with a stone which he rubs over the back of his foot .
When he visits the prison, the father gives his son a note. On it is a printout from the website about feeling pleasure through pain. The son smiles at this kind of pleasure and throws the note away. However, he realizes that this may be the only way for him to experience pleasure. During the night he breaks a piece of stone out of the cell wall and rubs it over his arm until a feeling of liberation sets in. On the day he is released from prison, the son is picked up by his father and he gives him a stone as a gift. As a result, the son has more and more pain-induced orgasm and his father helps him treat the resulting wounds. The son visits the father's former lover and asks for forgiveness. However, she pulls out a knife and rams it into the son's shoulder. However, he does not feel any pain and instead touches the beloved's breasts. As a result, he rubs and pushes the knife deeper and deeper into the wound and feels pleasure. The mistress helps him achieve orgasm.
When the leader of the street gang is released from custody, he is picked up by his lover and emasculated as punishment for the rape with the help of his son. The same form of masturbation through pain is performed by the son and lover with the leader of the gang. Father and son also draw new hope from news of a successful penis transplant. The son then undergoes an operation, but without success. Even with fellatio by the beloved, the son is unable to achieve an erection . The mother suddenly appears again in the house and lies down in the marriage bed to sleep. The father then sleeps in bed with his son. In the middle of the night, their mother comes to bed and caresses her boy lovingly, which gives him an erection. The father seeks forgiveness from his wife and rubs a wound on the back of his hand in front of her eyes . Encouraged by the erection, the boy flees to the lover in order to satisfy himself sexually, but the lover tearfully realizes that she cannot stimulate him. When the son returns, the mother tries to please her son, but the father prevents them. The son locks himself in his room and only lets his mother come to him after a while. The father can not prevent the incest between mother and son. The mother pleases her son with her hand and lets him close to her breast. In tears she gives him an orgasm. The son cries himself to sleep after the satisfaction of the mother. Out of grief and anger, the father then tries to murder his son with a knife.
The neutered boss of the street gang seeks out his lover again and asks her to stab him with a knife so that he feels pleasure pain. The son watches the goings-on between them. When the mother wants to give herself completely to the son, the father takes her away from her son and simulates a sexual act with her in the marriage bed. The wife casts her husband away. During the night, the father takes his revolver out of the desk drawer again and shoots his wife and then himself. Meanwhile, the son wakes up from an erotic dream with his mother and finds his dead parents in the hallway of the house. The only way out is that the son points the gun at his penis and emasculates himself again.
The film ends with the son's prayer in front of a shop selling Buddha statutes , which he comments, smiling, without a word.

In South Korea, the film was given a restricted rating by the responsible Korea Media Rating Board before it was released . Due to this classification, the film would only have been allowed to run in special cinemas , which would have made commercial exploitation almost impossible. Kim was then forced to cut the film and remove the offending scenes from the film. The final version was approved for 18+ and has been shortened by around two and a half minutes compared to the international version.
In North America , the film premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival , but could not win a prize.
