The Complete Quartets with Sonny Clark is a jazz album by Grant Green , recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in Englewood Cliffs , New Jersey on December 23, 1961, and on January 13 and 31, 1962. The recordings first appeared on the Blue- Note -LPs Nigeria , Gooden's Corner and Oleo 1979/80; in 1997 they were released on CD by Blue Note under the new title.
The album
Grant Green was heard in the 1960s with his broad, bluesy sound and infectious swing on numerous soul jazz sessions of the Blue Note label, as a sideman on recordings by Lee Morgan , Lou Donaldson , John Patton and other musicians. The quartet recordings with Sonny Clark , Sam Jones , Art Blakey and Louis Hayes - together with the albums Born to Be Blue (1962) Idle Moments and Street of Dreams (1964) - are among the most important albums by guitarist Grant Green .
The first session, which was later released on the album Gooden's Corner , took place on December 23, 1961; Sam Jones and Louis Hayes were members of the Cannonball Adderley band at the time . It emerged u. a. Versions of the jazz standards On Green Dolphin Street , What Is This Thing Called Love? , Moon River and Grant Green's own compositions Gooden's Corner and Two for One, which is based on Miles Davis ' modal composition So What . Ike Quebec , who was working at Blue Note at the time, joined in for one piece ; Count Every Star was then released on Quebec's own Blue Note album Blue and Sentimental . The rest of the session was initially unpublished.
In the second session of the quartet Art Blakey got in for Louis Hayes; it was the only time that the guitarist and the jazz messengers leader recorded together. At the time, they played current pieces such as Sonny Rollins' number Airegin and a number of standards from the Great American Songbook such as The Song Is You, The Things We Did Lust Summer and Cole Porter's I Concentrate on You. But the ten-minute interpretation of Gershwin's It Ain't Necessarily So stood out in particular . These recordings were also held back by Blue Note at the time; Presumably because Blue Note Records was unable to bring the relatively large number of recordings that Green made at the time on the market. In 1961 alone, six LP sessions took place under Green's direction for Blue Note.
Louis Hayes returned for the third session on January 31; Once they took a Rollins titles, Oleo , the Miles Davis / Eddie- "Clean Head" -Vinson -Titel Tune Up and other jazz standards like Little Girl Blue and then by John Coltrane now famous interpretation of My Favorite Things by Rodgers and Hammerstein up. These recordings were also initially unpublished.
On January 13, 1962, the group came together for the last time to record the Grant Green album Born to be Blue with Ike Quebec .
Edition history
Gooden's Corner appeared on the Japanese branch of Blue Note Records in 1979; Without the alternate take by Airegin and the title Nancy , the recordings of the session from January 13th appeared on the Blue Note album Nigeria (BLT 1032) in 1980 . The recordings of the third session on January 31, 1980 were released in Japan under the title Oleo . Nancy and the alternate takes by Airegin and Oleo first appeared in an anthology by Mosaic Records in 1989 . The edition was also released on CD under the title The Complete Blue Note Recordings of Grant Green with Sonny Clark on Mosaic Records .

The All Music Guide rated The Complete Quartets with Sonny Clark with the highest grade; also Richard Cook and Brian Morton in their Penguin Guide to Jazz ; they emphasize the important role of pianist Sonny Clark for the sessions; he guarantees that the tempo never drops, not even in the lovely ballads like Nancy or Mancini's Moon River . The edition is particularly outstanding due to Green's interpretation of Gershwin's It Ain't Necessarily So , in which the guitarist is encouraged to keep changing phrases by Art Blakey, who gives the standard a special Latin feeling with his 12/8 bar playing becomes.
