occupation

The Cosmonaut (Original title: El cosmonauta ) is a Spanish science fiction film by the director Nicolás Alcalá. The film is based on the poetry book Poetics for Cosmonauts by Henry Pierrot and is the first feature film by the Riot Cinema Collective . It was crowdfunded and published under a Creative Commons license. The premiere took place on May 9, 2013 at the Las Palmas Film Festival . the film was released on May 15, 2013 in Germany.

action

The Cosmonaut is set around 1967 and is about Stas, Andrei and Yulia. Stas and Andrei came to the Svyosdny Gorodok settlement near Moscow, known as the “Star City” , to be trained as cosmonauts . The USSR is in the middle of a race with the US to bring the first man to the moon. Also on site is the radio operator Yulia, who both have had an eye on. After an accident, Andrei retires from cosmonaut training and becomes a rocket technician, while Stas finishes his training and becomes the first Russian to land on the moon. On the return flight, the world of action splits: From the point of view of Andrei and Yulia, the empty capsule lands on earth after seven months, from the point of view of Stas, however, it lands on an abandoned earth. The tapes he left behind in the capsule lead to more and more tensions building up in the relationship between Andrei and Yulia.

Influences

Both the concept and the cinematic approaches behind The Cosmonaut show numerous influences from well-known directors. The project dossier explicitly names Wong Kar-Wai , Andrei Tarkowski , José Luis Guerín , and Robert Bresson , among others . Numerous references can be found in particular to the work of Tarkowski, both in relation to the main themes of the film (memories, lost love and reality), as well as in relation to the plot (the two main characters of the film, Andrei and Stas, have the same name like Tarkowski and his father). Among the people who worked on the film were Eduard Artemjew , who worked with Tarkovsky, and Marina Tarkovskaya, Tarkovsky's sister.

production

The Cosmonaut was originally planned as a short film. The pre-production for this began in October 2008. In January 2009, but decided instead a feature film length to produce. The financing was to be realized through crowdfunding and the finished film was to be published under a Creative Commons Share Alike license.

There were two ways to get involved in the production. 1. As a regular producer: For a contribution of 2 euros, the donor was named as the producer in the credits . 2. As an investor: For an amount of 100 euros, the donor was able to share in the proceeds of the film. In this way, more than 400,000 euros were donated by more than 4,500 "producers".

The business model was revised between December 2009 and June 2010. It was presented at a press conference on June 2, 2010. While the film was previously financed by crowdfunding and private investors, the new model should also take sponsorship and advance sales of distribution rights into account. The project was expected to cost a total of 860,000 euros and it was assumed that 6.5% of the film budget would be funded by crowdfunding and merchandising, 21% by private investors, 32% by sponsorship and 40.5% by distribution rights.

Later it was decided that The Cosmonaut should not be a feature film, but following the successful franchises of The Matrix and Lost should be implemented as a transmedia project. This is how webisodes , mobile content or even an alternate reality game (ARG) should be created.

reception

After more than a year of advertising, the project had received special attention in the national media in Spain. There were reports of the film on a few public television channels, e.g. E.g. at Televisión Española in the news program laSexta , Cuatro and La 2 , as well as in various newspapers, magazines and radio stations, including El País, El Mundo, ABC, Público, AND, La Gaceta, Fotogramas, Cadena Ser and los 40 Principales. The film was also featured in the Spanish edition of the Cahiers du Cinema .

However, the film received far greater attention on the Internet. A large number of web-based media, such as the online edition of El País , and some of the most influential blogs in Spain published articles on the film such as: B. Microsiervos . The reactions were not limited to Spain, however, some blogs in English also wrote about the film.

Much of the media attention arose after a two-day music festival. The festival called “CosmoNauts” was announced on June 9, 2009 in the film's blog. The event was planned as a mass event to promote the film. Between June 29th and 30th, nine bands from Madrid's indie scene played in front of a total of 400 people over two days. Filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo hosted the event. Due to the unfavorable location in the middle of the week and the inexperience of the organizers, the event was a failure from an economic point of view, but the organizers later emphasized the special importance of the concert for the success of the film.

Premiere in Madrid,
May 2013

Furthermore, in cooperation with Improba Spain , the film crew organized a flash mob on the Puerta del Sol on January 29, 2010 in order to publicize the film. The action was intended to simulate a moon landing in downtown Madrid, which resulted in lively participation.
