background
The Game of Their Lives is a co-production with BBC Four . It is the first Western documentary in more than four decades that could be shot in North Korea with permission. Director Daniel Gordon then made other documentaries in and about North Korea, such as A State of Mind from 2004. In North Korea, the shooting was supervised by Ryom Mi-hwa, who works for Korfilm , the state film company in North Korea. After the recordings in North Korea, seven former players came to England at the invitation of the producers to revisit the sites of their success, such as the city of Middlesbrough , where the game against Italy took place. The former players also met the South Korean ambassador to Great Britain. They also attended the premiere at the Sheffield International Documentary Festival on October 21, 2002.
