The Idiots is one of the oldest German punk bands . The singer and head of the Dortmund formation founded in 1978 is Sir Hannes Schmidt (stage name ; also called Sir Hannes Smith, Sir Hannes or just Hannes).
history
The band members started in 1978 with slow Oi! -Punk, which evolved into hardcore punk in the mid-1980s . After various concerts and some sampler contributions, the first album They Call Us: The Idiots was released in 1984 . In 1987 the second album Cries of the Insane followed . Afterwards there were some changes in the line-up; the drummer and bassist said goodbye to the band. On the third album Station of Life , which was released in 1989, there were clear Thrash Metal influences. Sir Hannes and the guitarist Holger Bals then left the band; of the founding members only the bassist Olaf Jantoss remained. The fourth album Imzeichen des Kreuzes was created with a new singer in 1992 , but it could no longer tie in with the old Idiots times. Then the band broke up.
As early as 1986 - parallel to his work as Idiots - Sir Hannes founded the crossover band Phantoms of Future , which was temporarily under contract with major labels and dissolved at the end of 2001 after 16 years. Then in 2002 he founded the folk punk band Honigdieb, which still exists today (2020) .
2012 saw the Idiots comeback with a new guitarist and a new drummer; The concerts included, among other things, live performances at Rock in denüsten and at the Ruhrpott Rodeo , Germany's largest punk festival. The release of the fifth album Amok in April 2013 was followed by the albums Gott sei Punk (2014) and Schweinköter (2019).
Since 1987 Sir Hannes Schmidt has also been running the record store and distributor Idiots Records in downtown Dortmund .
