Rock in the ruins
Rock in the Ruins was an annual rock- open air festival from 1995 to 2013 (until 2011 on April 30th) . It took place until 2010 on the site of the old Hohensyburg castle ruins in Dortmund, in close proximity to the Hohensyburg casino .
It was one of the most important newcomer festivals in Germany. Every year up to 15,000 young people met on this occasion at the traditional location high above the Ruhr valley . The catchment area and the public perception of the event were correspondingly large. In addition to popular, established artists, young bands were given the opportunity to perform in front of a large audience. For some well-known stars like Sascha, Cosmo Klein etc. this concert was a springboard for their national and international career. “Rock in the ruins” was an essential element of youth culture work in Dortmund.
This event was originally organized by the SPD local association Syburg-Bucholz and the Hörder Jusos . Later, the SPD district of Hörde took over the organizational tasks of the local association.
The Hörder Jusos were awarded 3rd place in the Wilhelm Dröscher Prize at the SPD federal party conference in Hamburg on October 28, 2007 for their longstanding commitment to “Rock in the Ruins” .
On April 30, 2008, the top acts at this festival were Liquido and The Sonic Boom Foundation, Brainbugs, Ice of Eden, Body 22, Downride, Soulshift, Stranded, The Hate Within and 2 Beats Break. In addition, u. a. Peer Steinbrück in Syburg to get an idea of the festival.
In 2011 the festival left its original location on the Hohensyburg and took place on the site of the former Phoenix steelworks .
In 2012, the festival was not held for the first time to dance in May on April 30, but on the previous Saturday, April 28, 2012. In addition, a band competition was held in advance, in which two local bands win the opportunity to perform at the festival could.
In January 2014 the 2014 festival was canceled due to a lack of sponsors and did not take place in the following years either.
