Baby Universal is an indie rock band from Halle (Saale) , consisting of Cornelius Ochs (vocals / guitar / piano), Hannes Scheffler (guitar), Tobias Lehmann (bass), Carsten Rothweiler (drums). Co-founder Friedrich Hentze (percussion / keyboard) left the group at the end of 2010.

history

The musicians already knew each other from joint jam sessions in their hometown Halle (Saale). From the idea of a joint concert in 2002 with the East German songwriter Hans-Eckardt Wenzel , the band was able to re-set texts by the American singer-songwriter legend Woody Guthrie . The project "Z-JOE and the Dustbowlers" was born. A CD called "a woody zombie hootenanny" was produced and published in 2003. The musicians still play some of these pieces at concerts today. Since the project "Z-JOE and the Dustbowlers" was closely interwoven with Woody Guthrie, but now completely own pieces were written, the band renamed itself in 2007 to "Baby Universal".

During a trip through the USA , Cornelius Ochs developed the band's musical concept. The video for "Boys and Girls" was created. This video is considered to be the birth of Baby Universal.

The first live performance was followed shortly afterwards in Dresden , the first album Ahoy, Dark Beauty was published in 2008 at Kaboom Records and was supported by the band and the music producer Thommy Krawallo produced . Baby Universal already appeared as the opening act for Björn Dixgard ( Mando Diao ) and Phillip Boa . They belonged to the newcomer bands of the Volkswagen Sound Foundation 2010, their godfather was the rock band Reamonn . This was followed by a smaller tour with Arlo Guthrie and Wenzel.

In August 2010, the official debut album Baby Universal was released by Dreaminc, a Berlin independent label with EMI as distribution.

The group's music was mainly influenced by rock bands such as The Doors , Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds , INXS and David Bowie , who gave the band its name with his song from the last Tin Machine album. In March 2013 the new 11 track album "Slow Shelter" was released.
