The Last Wave (originally La Dernière Vague ) is a French mystery series from 2019. The series was planned as a miniseries from the start, and France 2 is not planning a second season either.
action
In the fictional French coastal town of Brizan on the Atlantic, a strange cloud suddenly appears in the sky. During a surfing competition, the cloud approaches the coastline and swallows the surfers who disappeared without a trace after the cloud dissolved. After an unsuccessful search, the surfers reappear after five hours. None of the disappeared can remember what happened in the five hours.
It is slowly becoming clear that surfers have changed: scars have disappeared, eye colors have changed and surfers are developing supernatural skills such as healing by the laying on of hands or breathing underwater.
Cast and dubbing
The German dubbing was created in 2020 based on a dubbing book by Katja Brügger and Joachim Kretzer, directed by Henning Stegelmann and Karin Grüger on behalf of Studio Hamburg Synchron .

reception
Overall, the series was received rather negatively by critics, Carolin Ströbele praised the beautiful plot for Zeit Online , but criticized the fact that it was a French economy production that could probably have become something in Hollywood.
Oliver Armknecht states on film-rezensions.de that The Last Wave is a series in which it is not at all clear what its concept is. He also describes the idea as successful, but the clarification of what exactly happened to the surfers happens completely casually and unkind. The shown conflicts of the individual roles are in his opinion on a soap opera level and urgent conflicts from the supernatural abilities of the characters are hardly dealt with.
Jan Lehr writes in the Nordwest-Zeitung that the scriptwriters in The Last Wave manage to create an atmosphere of uncertainty and that the characters bring plenty of conflict into play through their relationships. He rates the series as exciting and mysterious overall.
