content

The lonely Tony Egan runs a farm on the Irish island of Inis Dara with his assistant Patsy. One day he receives a letter from his sister Karen, who fled to the United States 20 years ago in an argument with her brother. In the letter she wrote on her deathbed, she announced the arrival of her 17-year-old son, Chad Egan-Washington.

When Tony picks up his nephew Chad, who is carrying his mother Karen's ashes in his luggage, from the ferry, he discovers to his initial horror that Chad is black. At the funeral for a deceased neighbor, Chad meets young Aislin Brady. She is the daughter of local bar owner Joe Brady, who was dating Karen twenty years ago. Tony Egan and Joe Brady are enemies and forbid Chad and Aislin to interact with each other. Aislin secretly shows Chad the island of Inis Dara. Chad and Aislin fall in love. This offends Peter O'Boyce, who is friends with Aislin. Peter is the son of Brenda O'Boyce, who used to be Karen's closest friend. During a conversation with Brenda, Chad learns that Brenda and Tony were briefly a couple after Karen's departure and that Peter was Tony's illegitimate son, but was not recognized by him. A revealing sketch by Chad of Aislin falls into Peter's hands by accident. He makes a scene to Aislin in Joe Brady's presence. So Joe gets to see this sketch and confronts Tony Egan with this sketch.

Chad gets into an argument with Tony and decides to leave the island with his mother's urn. Aislin wants to run away with him, but Chad persuades her. On the morning of his departure, Chad meets Joe Brady and hands him twenty-year-old letters from his mother Karen to him, which Tony had withheld and which prove that Karen was trying to contact Joe at the time. Joe confronts Tony and accuses him of driving Chad away just as he was his mother. Brenda, who still loves Tony, implores him to prevent Chad Inis from leaving Dara. With Joe Brady's help, Tony gets to the ferry in time and tries genuinely to persuade Chad to stay. Finally, Chad agrees. In the final scene, Chad and Tony give Karen's ashes to the wind on the island's cliff in the presence of the Bradys and O'Boyces.
