The People's Key is an album by the band Bright Eyes . It was released in February 2011.

It was Bright Eyes' first album after Cassadaga , which had been released almost four years earlier . In the meantime, band head Conor Oberst has released two solo albums. Overall, it is the eleventh album or the seventh regular studio album under the name Bright Eyes.

Album title

About the meaning of the album title, Colonel said:

“The term The People's Key refers to the note c in the scale. This is the key on the piano that all other white keys sound good for. It's the easiest key you can play. It took me forever for this record title, but now I'm very happy with it. "

- Conor Colonel

Recording and artwork

The album was recorded during 2010 at ARC Studios in Colonel's hometown of Omaha , Nebraska .

The artwork was again designed by Zack Nipper , who already took over the graphic design of the previous album Cassadaga and won the Grammy for it in 2008.

The People's Key received mixed reception from the critics. There were positive reviews from Josef Gasteiger on laut.de with four out of five or from Kevin Holtmann on Plattentests.de with eight out of ten points.

On the other hand, there were rather average reviews at Pitchfork Media , where the album was rated five out of ten points, although the ladder song was explicitly highlighted as positive. Allmusic and Rolling Stone each award three and a half out of five points.
