action

In 1857, James Murray , professor of philology , began collecting words for the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary . In addition to the standard language, Murray also wants to include the language of the common people in the work, and list each word with an example quote and its etymological derivation. He gets help with this mammoth project from an ominous Dr. William C. Minor , who has sent him 10,000 contributions over the years. Murray does not learn until much later that his supporter is incarcerated in a high security psychiatric ward for offenders for murder.

reception

The Professor and the Madman received mostly negative reviews and has an aggregate approval rating of 38% from 16 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes . Variety's Jay Weissberg wrote that Gibson was good, but everything else in the film didn't work. The dialogues are uninspired and the editing is bad.
