The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories) is the third solo studio album by Porcupine Tree founder and producer Steven Wilson . It was released on March 1, 2013.
background
After releasing his last studio album, Grace for Drowning, in 2011 and the tour that followed, Wilson never returned to Porcupine Tree. Each of the six tracks on the new album draws its inspiration from supranaturalism . Alan Parsons , who had already set the Edgar Allan Poe poem The Raven to music together with Eric Woolfson , was able to be won as producer . Alan Parsons can also be heard on the album as a guitarist.
The first track on the album, Luminol , was played live on the Grace for Drowning tour and can also be seen on the live DVD Get All You Deserve (2012).
Style and reception
Compared to Steven Wilson's previous albums has on The Raven That Refused to Sing (and other stories) the proportion of jazz-rock - and retro prog increased -Einflüssen. This can be explained by the fact that Steven Wilson before the "classical" music albums for a Emerson, Lake & Palmer , Jethro Tull and King Crimson a remix had undergone, on the other hand, the volume of this genre is primarily composed of musicians.
The album was received mostly positively; for example Anton Kostudis wrote:
"The Raven That Refused To Sing" is Wilson's most multifaceted solo album to date. The very tidy and warm sound also puts the compositions in the limelight. "
Markus Peltner agrees on the baby blue pages :
"The Raven That Refused To Sing And Other Stories" has turned out to be a very varied album. Exciting from the first to the last bar. Over everything there is a more or less existing and sometimes only latent sadness, but the listener is caught, caught and hugged again and again. Embraced with chords, melodies and moods that are worth enjoying, to which you can completely indulge in their diversity, which never get boring and which can inspire you again and again. "
