The Staggering Girl is a short film by Italian director Luca Guadagnino from the year 2019 . The film was produced in close collaboration with Pierpaolo Piccioli, the creative director of the Valentino fashion house . The main roles are played by Julianne Moore , Mia Goth , Kyle MacLachlan , Marthe Keller and Alba Rohrwacher .

Francesca is an Italian writer who lives and works in the United States. Her elderly mother lives in Rome, but can no longer live alone in her apartment due to increasing frailty and now almost blind. Francesca flies to Rome to take care of her mother and to find a solution how to go on with her life, to persuade her to move to a retirement home.

In Rome her memories come from her previous life, triggered by lingering in places where she lived, on people she once met in Rome and who - like in a stream of consciousness - suddenly appear and then disappear again.

Guadagnino worked with a well-rehearsed team. For Sayombhu Mukdeeprom it was the fourth film they made together since 2017, and it was again filmed in 35 mm format. All male roles were played by Kyle MacLachlan. For Alba Rohrwacher it is the fourth film under Guardagnino's direction, Mia Goth is starring for the second time in a Guadagnino film.

The film premiered in Cannes on May 17, 2019 within Directors Fortnight. In October 2019 he was presented at the Mumbai Film Festival. The streaming service MUBI has the distribution rights for the film .

There were only four votes for Rotten Tomatoes, all of which were negative. There was general criticism for the thin script, the substance of which is insufficient for more than one fashion film in the fashion industry. David Ehrlich, the critic of IndieWire, compares it to Guadagnino's promotional film about luxury hotels and sees it as an advertisement for Valentino's 2018/19 winter collection. The synthesizer music by Ryuichi Sakamoto received unanimous praise .
