The Sufferer & the Witness (roughly in German: The victim and the witness) is the fourth studio album by the American punk band Rise Against . The thematic focus is on climate and environmental protection as well as global warming and animal rights . It is also the last Rise Against studio album to feature Chris Chasse as lead guitarist.

Production and publication

In January 2006, Rise Against announced that they would begin production of their fourth studio album. Together with Bill Stevenson, who had also produced the previous album, they recorded the new album from March 2006. On April 19, 2006, Rise Against announced the title of the new album The Sufferer & The Witness and an approximate release date. During this time, promotion was mainly carried out via the Internet . In Germany mainly in cooperation with the music magazine Vertigo.FM, which also runs the official German fan club of Rise Against. On July 4th 2006 the album was released in the USA and Canada, on July 28th 2006 in Europe.

Controversy

The music video for the single Ready To Fall , in which, among other things, pictures of dying baby seals and whales can be seen, caused much discussion. In order to avoid litigation, MTV refused to broadcast the video and asked Rise Against to defuse it. However, the band unanimously refused and have since offered the video for free download.

music

Musically, The Sufferer & The Witness is somewhere between hardcore punk and melodic hardcore and hardly differs from the band's previous albums. The rhythm guitar mainly plays repetitive power chords while the lead guitar takes on solos and melodic parts. In the chorus , mostly all instruments play together with the screaming vocals of Tim McIlrath. Often guitar parts are muted by holding a finger on the strings , as in the intro of the song Ready To Fall .

criticism

The Sufferer & The Witness was largely praised by the trade press. Mathias Möller from laut.de wrote :

“Rise Against embody something like the good conscience of the punk scene. They underline this with their fourth studio album 'The Sufferer And The Witness'. They don't annoy with do-gooding, but let it rip. "

- Mathias Möller : laut.de

The magazine cdstarts.de also gave a positive rating of 7/10 points:

"This is exactly how you write punk rock songs that have hit qualities but do not give rise to childish pop-punk suspicions."

- Matthias Reichel : cdstarts.de
