Appeal to Reason ( English for about "Appeal to Reason") is the fifth studio album - and the third on a so-called major label - the American band Rise Against . In Europe , the album was released between October 3rd and 10th, 2008; later than in Germany, the album was not released for sale in any other country worldwide.

The song Re-Education (Through Labor) was released as the first single ; the video for the single appeared a few days later. Director of music videos is Kevin Kerslake , who had previously been with bands like Green Day and Nirvana had turned videos. In addition, the tracks Audience of One and Savior were released as singles.

Emergence

Rise Against announced after their The Sufferer & The Witness tour in 2007 that they would be returning to the studio to work on the next album. As a rough schedule, they gave a planned release date in spring or summer 2008. At the beginning of January 2008, the band announced on their official homepage that work on a new album had now been moved to the studio. With that the announcement of a new album was official.

On July 14, 2008, the name of the new album, Appeal To Reason, and its release date of October 7th in the United States and Canada were first announced. The publication date in Europe varied between October 3 and 10, 2008; in Germany it was published on October 10, 2008.

content

In the lyrics of the songs on this album, Rise Against thematize their protest against nuclear weapons and war, as in the first track of the album, Collapse (Post America) : "When the air that we breathe becomes air that we choke" (German for example: " When the air we breathe becomes the air we suffocate ”). Further topics are environmental and animal welfare - two topics that Rise Against have already campaigned for on the previous albums and for which they also advocate privately. Two of the band members are vegans , the other two vegetarians .

promotion

Rise Against distributed the album in particular with the help of the Internet . The album cover was published in the run-up to the Internet platform Myspace in mid-August . In addition, exclusive tracks that were not on the CD were offered through iTunes .

On October 2nd, Rise Against began the tour of the same name for the album in Cleveland , in which the release was specially promoted. The tour for the album lasted until the end of 2009.

criticism

The criticism of Appeal to Reason was mixed. On average the album had 65/100 points.

  • The website CDStarts.de wrote about Appeal to Reason :
“If“ Appeal To Reason ”starts right at the beginning with the usual scratchy punk beat (“ Collapse (Post-America) ”) it is audibly more melodic in the following time.” And gave the album 7/10 points.
  • Michael Rensen from the Amazon.de editorial team wrote:
“Thanks to excellent songs and intelligent, socially critical lyrics, Rise Against have risen to become one of the most successful melodic hardcore groups in the world in recent years. On their fifth album, too, they prove that there are still artists in the scene who are suitable for the masses and who have more to offer than flat pop. The foursome from Chicago follows the traces of the great Bad Religion lyrically and partly also musically, but remains independent and strives for originality at all times. Carried by Tim McIlrath's charismatic voice, they celebrate 14, without exception, first-class songs whose lyrics get under your skin and whose refrains go to your heart. Appeal To Reason is the best Rise Against album to date and one of the greatest genre releases in recent years. "
