description

Thelypteris marquesensis in its natural habitat

Thelypteris marquesensis is a perennial herbaceous plant . It grows as a small lithophytic fern that grows on damp rocks, rarely also on moss-covered tree stumps. It forms a slender, unbranched, lying to semi-upright rhizome , which is 1.5 to 7 inches long and 0.4 to 1.2 inches thick. The rhizome is dense at the base of the fronds and otherwise sparsely covered with red-brown, needle-shaped hair.

At the ends of the rhizomes, the fronds stand together in groups of seven to nine. The frond stalks are 1 to 8.5 inches long and are medium brown in the lower part and medium to reddish brown in the upper part. They are sparsely covered with reddish brown to light brown, needle-shaped hairs that are 0.3 to 0.7 millimeters long. There are also a few scales on the frond stalks, with the red-brown to brownish-black scales at the base being egg-shaped to sickle-shaped with a length of 1 to 2 millimeters and a width of 0.5 to 0.7 millimeters. The simply pinnate to pinnate fronds are elongated to elliptical with a length of 2.5 to 8.5 centimeters and a width of 1.2 to 2.8 centimeters and contain five to twelve pairs of leaflets. The fronds end in a pinnate tip. The lowest leaflets are slightly reduced and bent back. The largest of the leaflets are 0.6 to 1.4 inches long and between 0.3 and 0.5 inches wide. The tips of the leaflets are blunt and they are lobed to one-third to one-half of their entire width, with the lobes having notched edges. The edges of the leaflets have needle-shaped hairs 0.3 to 0.6 millimeters long. The leaf central nerve on the underside of the leaf is finely covered with brown needle-shaped hairs while the upper side is bald or sparsely hairy. Leaf glands are completely absent.

The Sori stand in the middle of the leaf and have a kidney-shaped to approximately circular indusium . They have glands on the edges, but are otherwise bare.

Occurrence

Thelypteris marquesensis is endemic to the island of Hiva Oa , one of the Marquesas islands in the southern Pacific . Thelypteris marquesensis is only known from one population at Mont Temetiu . The species grows there in low, often wind-blown, montane wet forests and scrubland at altitudes of 1000 to 1200 meters. The species associated with Thelypteris marquesensis include Alsophila tahitensis , Cheirodendron bastardianum , Crossostylis biflora , Leptochloa marquisensis , Metrosideros collina , Weinmannia marquesana and representatives of the genera Cyrtandra , Freycinetia , Melicope , Psychotria and other vascular plants .

Systematics

The first description of Thelypteris marque sensis was made in 2011 by David H. Lorence and Kenneth Richard Wood and phytokeys . The specific epithet marquesensis refers to the distribution area on the Marquesas Islands.
