Cyrtandra is a plant genus in the family of Gesneriad (Gesneriaceae). It forms the largest genus of the Gesneriaceae family . The wide distribution area extends from Southeast Asia over Australia to the Pacific Islands. Vegetative characteristics

Depending on the Cyrtandra species, growth forms range from perennial herbaceous plants to shrubs or, rarely, small trees . No rhizomes are formed. Most species thrive terrestrially, some as epiphytes . The branched or simple, mostly independently upright or ascending stem axes are round or angular in cross-section and lignified in most species.

Usually a few leaves are formed opposite each other and in whorls, rarely distributed alternately on the stem axis. In the case of opposite leaves, both can be the same or different within a pair. There are all transitions from isophylly to extreme anisophylly . In the most extreme case of anisophylly, the small leaf of a pair is reduced to a tiny, triangular scale (e.g. Cyrtandra dispar , Cyrtandra baileyi ). The leaves are divided into a short to long petiole and leaf blade. The shape of the leaf blades is variable and ranges from narrow-lanceolate to almost circular. The leaf margin is smooth or serrated. There is pinnate veins . The base of the leaf blades is pointed to wedge-shaped or rarely heart-shaped. Depending on the species, the leaf blades are hairless to dense, soft, shaggy or silky. An important anatomical feature of many species is the Vorhandsein of sclereids (osteo and / or Astrosclereiden) in the hypodermis and mesophyll of the leaves.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescence shafts are short to long. The lateral or rarely cauliflower inflorescences can be in the upper or lower (sometimes leafless) part of the stem axes or sometimes they arise underground. The flowers stand individually or in groups to many loosely or densely in zymous inflorescences. There are two opposite bracts or they are missing. The wrapper leaves are mostly free or are seldom grown together and form a conspicuous cup.

The hermaphroditic flowers are usually five-fold and radial symmetry to zygomorphic with a double flower envelope . The usually five durable or sloping sepals are free or fused. The calyx is sometimes two-lipped. The calyx ends in two to five, rarely six equal or dissimilar calyx lobes. The color of the petals is usually light, white to yellow in many species, only a few species are orange, green, reddish through pink to purple. The usually five petals are fused together in the shape of a bell, tube, funnel or plate . The corolla tube is usually much longer than the corolla lobes. The corolla is hairy to downy on the inside. The corolla is two-lipped. The two-lobed upper lip is shorter to almost as long as the three-lobed lower lip. In the case of the lower lip, all three corolla lobes are the same length or the middle lobe is longer than the lateral ones. The corolla lobes have a rounded to blunt, rarely pointed upper end. The two or three staminodes are fused with the top of the corolla tube. There are usually only two fertile stamens present, rarely (in species of the earlier genera Protocyrtandra and Cyrtandroidea ) there are four. The stamens are fused at the level of the middle on the underside of the corolla tube. The stamens usually do not protrude above the corolla. The basifix to dorsifix anthers hang together or are free and open with a longitudinal slit. The counters are mostly almost parallel. The disc is ring-shaped or rarely cup-shaped and produces nectar; often it is also recognizable on the fruit. The Upper constant, unilocular ovary is oblong ovate to. The two placentas protrude in two columns, curved back inward. The stylus is short or long. The undivided or sometimes bilobed stigma is head-shaped to ovoid, inverted triangular.

Fruits and seeds

Depending on the species, the berries are fleshy (species of the eastern Pacific region), leathery or hard-walled (species in the western area of ​​distribution) and are ovoid to oblong or spherical. If the long-life calyx is present, it is a little shorter to longer than the berry. The tiny seeds have no appendages.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34, perhaps rarely 2n = 32.

In some species in Borneo and Sulawesi, the inflorescences arise at the base of the stem and the inflorescence stems elongate and curve and thus reach the ground; in other species the flowers form underground (for example Cyrtandra rhizantha ); this is called geoflory. Nothing is known about the spread of the hard-skinned fruits, but the fleshy berries are safely spread by birds.

Locations

Most Cyrtandra species thrive in lowland and mountain rainforests . The vast majority of species occur in rainforests, but there are no species in seasonally dry to year-round dry areas.

Danger

Many Cyrtandra species are rare, only small-scale endemic species . They often only occur on one island and sometimes only in a small area. Many species are endangered. At least one species is extinct in nature. Some species are considered "Critically Endangered" = "threatened with extinction".

Systematics and distribution

The genus Cyrtandra was established in 1776 by Johann Reinhold Forster and Georg Forster . As Lectotypusart 1966 Cyrtandra biflora J.R.Forst. & G.Forst. by Harold St. John (1892-1991) in Bernice P. Bishop Museum Bulletin , Volume 229, pp. 3-5. The generic name Cyrtandra is derived from the Greek words κυρτος, kyrtos for curved, twisted and ανδρος, andros for masculine; this refers to the curved stamens of the stamens. Synonyms for Cyrtandra J.R. The distribution area of the genus Cyrtandra extends from the Nicobar Islands and southern Thailand via Malesia and the southern Pacific islands to the islands of Hawaii. There are 24 to 26 species in the Solomon Islands . There have been 11 species in the Marquesas since 2013 . 17 species have been described in Sulawesi since 2014 . The northernmost occurrences are on an island of Taiwan ( Cyrtandra umbellifera ) and on the Ryūkyū Islands ( Cyrtandra yaeyamae ). Centers of biodiversity are Borneo, New Guinea and the Pacific Islands; or other authors write that centers of biodiversity are in Southeast Asia and Malesia. Cyrtandra is the most species-rich genus of the Gesneriaceae family and, in the Old World , the most widely distributed.

The genus Cyrtandra was divided into two sub-genera and 13 sections by Clarke in 1883 (with only 157 known species at the time). However, this classification does not reflect any natural kinship groups and is therefore currently not recognized as such. A reorganization of this genus is urgently required.

About 600 species have been described and new species are often discovered. But not every name described is also accepted. There are a large number of synonyms . For example, Hawaii has 514 taxon names but only 58 accepted species; Many names have been given to taxa that represent hybrids, of which there are sometimes only a few specimens in areas where species overlap (see also the list of synonyms of hybrids below).

Special features of many Hawaiian Cyrtandra species

The species occurring in Hawaii are often well adapted to the colonization of raw soil after volcanic eruptions, these species are called "ha'iwale" there. One group of these Hawaiian species in particular is often difficult to identify because they develop in a highly polymorphic manner and hybridize easily with one another . From 1987–1988, St. John provided initial descriptions of over 250 species for Hawaii , but realistically only about 60 species occur in Hawaii. This extreme polymorphism results from extensive interspecific and mostly intersectional hybrid formation.
