Camiguin Island is an island in the Cagayan Province of the Philippines . It belongs to the archipelago of the Babuyan Islands and is located about 45 km off the north coast of the island of Luzon , in the Luzon Strait . The island has an area of ​​approximately 166 km² and is administered by the municipality of Calayan . On the island are the Barangay Balatubat, Naguilian and Minabel. In 2007 they had a total of 4582 inhabitants. There are five schools on the island: the Minabel Elementary School, Naguilian Elementary School, Balatubat Elementary School, Calayan High School-Camiguin Annex and the Lyceum of Camiguin.

Camiguin Island is shaped like a hand ax, 29 km long and 18 km wide. The coastline of the island is characterized by shallow and deeply cut bays. The topography of the island is characterized by a mountainous landscape with steep hills, in the center of the island the terrain rises to 828 meters above sea level. In the south of the island is the 712 meter high active volcano Camiguin de Babuyanes . The vegetation of the island consists partly of dense, tropical vegetation, in the interior of the island there is a tropical lowland rainforest , while the slopes of the Camiguin de Babuyanes are covered with a dense grass savannah landscape. Intensive agricultural areas are limited along the rivers and streams in the north and west of the island.

Little is known of the flora and fauna ; the only known endemic species on Camiguin Island is the common wolf tooth snake ( Lycodon bibonius ). Another species of reptile is the Varanus marmoratus and, in larger mammals, the Fleckenmusang ( Paradoxurus hermaphroditus ). The Pandanus tectorius , coconut palms and banana plants ( Musaceae ) are known as useful plants .

Typhoons can occur from July to October . The heaviest rainfall occurs from August to November. From December to May the island is under the influence of the drier north-west monsoons. The warmest months are from May to September.

West is Fuga Iceland in about 34 km, north-west is Dalupiri Iceland about 70 km, and Calayan Iceland 55 km away from the island. The island can be reached via the port of Aparri . The volcanic island of Didicas is 22 km northeast .

Another island, Camiguin, is located off the north coast of Mindanao .
