The vegetation of the island consists partly of dense, tropical vegetation, but partly also of intensively agriculturally used areas. In the interior of the island is a tropical lowland rainforest . There are screw trees ( pandanus ) along the rivers and streams . In 2004 the endemic Calayan rail ( Gallirallus calayanensis ) living on the island was described for the first time, for this reason attempts have been made since then to place the island areas under nature protection.
