Calayan Island is an island in the Cagayan Province of the Philippines . It belongs to the Babuyan Islands and is located about 75 km off the north coast of the island of Luzon , in the Luzon Strait . The island has an area of approximately 196 km² and is administered by the municipality of Calayan . On the island there are the Barangay Poblacion, Centro II, Balatubat, Dibay, Dadao, Magsidel. In 2007 they had a total of 8919 inhabitants.
Calayan Island has a wide elliptical shape with a length of 28 km and a width of 14 km. The island's coastline is characterized by shallow bays. The topography of the island is characterized by a mountainous landscape, in the center of the island the terrain rises to 543 meters above sea level, on Mount Calayan, and up to 429 meters on Mount Nongabaywanan. The vegetation of the island consists partly of dense, tropical vegetation, but partly also of intensively agriculturally used areas. In the interior of the island is a tropical lowland rainforest . There are screw trees ( pandanus ) along the rivers and streams . In 2004 the endemic Calayan rail ( Gallirallus calayanensis ) living on the island was described for the first time, for this reason attempts have been made since then to place the island areas under nature protection.
South is Fuga Iceland about 40 km south-east is Dalupiri Iceland about 25 km, south-east lies Camiguin Iceland 55 km away from the island. The island can be reached via the port of Aparri .
