Theo Bos (born October 5, 1965 in Nijmegen , † February 28, 2013 in Elst ) was a Dutch football player and coach . Because of his many years of loyalty to Vitesse Arnhem , both as a player and as a coach, he became known as "Mister Vitesse".

Player career

Theo Bos played his entire career with Vitesse Arnhem . He made his debut on August 31, 1983 against FC Wageningen (3-0 for Vitesse), his last league game was on March 25, 1998 against NAC Breda (4-1 for Vitesse). In the fifteen years of his professional career, Bos played six years in the Eerste Divisie and nine years in the Eredivisie . While in his first year 1983/84 he only played one league appearance in the second Dutch division, he was a regular player and top performer from summer 1985 to summer 1996 and never played fewer than 27 games per season. Only in his last two years as a professional was Bos increasingly in the role of a spectator. The defensive player celebrated his greatest success with Arnhem in 1988/89 when he won first place in the Eerste Divisie and rose. In the first year after promotion, Bos finished fourth with his club, Arnhem's best league result in the history of the Eredivisie. This was the first time they qualified for the UEFA Cup . In the same year they failed in the final of the KNVB Cup at PSV Eindhoven. In his last professional year, the black and yellow were third in the league. With that, Bos said goodbye to his playing career.

Together with his former teammate Edward Sturing , Bos played his farewell game in the UEFA Cup against German representative FC Schalke 04 on January 27, 1999 .

After the end of the 1989/90 season, Theo Bos was voted the best player of the team by supporters of the club. He was the first Vitesse kicker to receive this award, which was only launched in 1990. In the following year he was inherited by René Eijer . Other well-known bearers of this title were Phillip Cocu and Dejan Stefanović .

Coaching career

Bo's first job as a coach was at his hometown club Vitesse Arnhem, where he was active as a youth coach for the A and B youth. In the meantime, he also works as assistant coach to Ronald Koeman , Mike Snoei and Edward Sturing . In the summer of 2005 "Mister Vitesse" left the club and went to FC Den Bosch , where he replaced the interim coaching trio Jan van Grinsve , Fred van der Hoorn and Wim van der Horst in order to make it back to the top Dutch league. In the first year in the Eerste Divisie he led the team in seventh place, in the following year in fifth place. It was not until 2008/09 that he led the FCDB into the play-offs for the Eredivisie. After a 1-0 win against FC Zwolle , two defeats followed and thus the final relegation game against De Graafschap was missed . During the 2008/09 season, during the winter break, he returned to Vitesse after poor results from Hans Westerhof . Bos made his coaching debut for the club for fifteen years as a professional on matchday 18, January 17, 2009, in the away game against FC Twente Enschede . The game was lost 1: 2. Finally he secured the league for the black and yellow . A new investor joined Vitesse for the new season and gave Bos the opportunity to sign new players such as Guram Kashia , Slobodan Rajković , Ismaïl Aissati , Nemanja Matić , Nacer Barazite and Marcus Pedersen in order to make the team competitive for the title fight. After a bad start to the new season, Bos was terminated by the Vitesse officials after the 9th match day and only two wins. At the beginning of 2011, Bos became the coach of Polonia Warsaw , but after two months he was sacked due to poor results. For the 2011/12 season he took over the position of head coach at FC Dordrecht , which he resigned in July 2012 due to his disease progressing.

death

In December 2011, Theo Bos was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Theo Bos died on February 28, 2013 in Elst in Gelderland, leaving behind his wife and three children.
