Theo Timmermans (born January 4, 1926 in The Hague , Netherlands , † December 6, 1995 there ) was a Dutch football player . Between 1950 and 1954 he was a professional in France; before and after he played for ADO Den Haag . He has been called up to the Dutch national team twelve times .

Club career

Timmermans played as a striker for the Hague club ADO . In 1950 he moved to the French league , where he was active for Olympique Nîmes . In 1954 he returned to ADO and it was the end of the year when the leagues of the professional football association NBVB and KNVB were merged into a professional league, one of the first to sign a professional contract with ADO. Although the Hague could not qualify for the new honor division , but rose after only one year in the second division with Timmermans. He played with the Hague in the Eredivisie until the end of 1960. In 1959 he was with his club in the cup final against VVV Venlo , which was lost 4-1.

National team

Timmermans' first four games in Oranje he made -Trikot before his professional time, all in 1949. His impressive debut alongside experienced players like Abe Lenstra , Arie de Vroet and Faas Wilkes gave strikers here against the French team on 23 April 1949 in Rotterdam . The Équipe tricolore had already taken the lead after three minutes through Jean Baratte , but Timmermans turned the encounter almost single-handedly with two goals in the sixth and tenth minutes of the game. Before half-time he made his only hat-trick in the national team with his third goal ; thanks to another goal from Wilkes, the Dutch won 4-1.

During his time as a professional in France, he was not eligible to play in the KNVB's only selection of amateurs. In the spring of 1953 he was the initiator of the charity game, for which he competed with ten other Dutch professionals abroad in Paris' Parc des Princes . With the match against France, known as Watersnoodwedstrijd , he and his colleagues paved the way for the introduction of professional football in his home country.

After returning to his home he celebrated in October 1954 in Antwerp against Belgium his comeback in Oranje and was in March 1955 in the first international match, were allowed to compete in the pros, along with four players from the team of Paris against Denmark on the lawn of Amsterdam Olympic Stadium . The game ended in a 1-1 draw. A year later he was there when the Dutch Elftal defeated reigning world champions Germany 2-1 in Düsseldorf in March 1956 . After meeting Belgium on April 28, 1957, his international career came to an end; overall he played twelve times in the national team. After his hat-trick at the beginning, he only scored one more goal, in 1955 in a 4-1 win over Switzerland .

After the active career

On January 1, 1961, the Vereniging van Contractspelers , the association of contract players, was founded; Timmermans became its first chairman.
