Theodor Bastard is a Russian band that is primarily anchored in world music , neofolk , dark wave and trip-hop . Thanks to Jana Vevys' entry into the band in 2004, these different styles of music were united. Until then, the band's musical style was characterized by industrial rock , noise and experimental music. The band was founded in 1996 in Saint-Petersburg by Alexander Starostin and at the very beginning it consisted only of him. Alexander's stage name is Fedor Svoloch (translated something like "Fedor scrap") and that was also the name of the band in the beginning. In 1999 the name was translated into English as "Theodor Bastard". The work of the band ignores everyday life on principle and is based on mythology and dreams.

Singer Jana Veva often sings in a language she has invented, as well as in rare languages that u. a. from the African, through the Asian to the Indian language area. The band makes use of both electronic stylistic devices and ancient instruments. Synthesizers , samplers or theremin mix with a variety of ethnic instruments such as darbuka , conga , djembé , daf , didgeridoo , gusli , zymbal , dulcimer , agogô , bawu , kalimba , marimba , ocarina , udu , reco-reco , caxixi , Cajón , Mongolian horse head violin , dung and jew's harp , as well as various classical instruments such as the violoncello or harp are used.
Over the past few years, Theodor Bastard has performed at many large fantasy, gothic, folk and medieval festivals, including the Wave-Gotik-Treffen (2011, 2014, 2017) and Fusion Festival (2004) in Germany, Dark Bombastic Evening (2012, 2013, 2016) in Romania, Castle Party (2014) in Poland, Menuo Juodaragis (2008, 2012, 2016) in Lithuania. The band also made several appearances at Castlefest (2015, 2017), the largest fantasy festival in the Netherlands.
Theodor Bastard has released nine albums in five countries: Germany ( Danse Macabre , Pandaimonium), Argentina (Twilight Records), Mexico (The Art Records), Turkey (Muzikal Yapım), Russia (Fulldozer).
The album "Oikoumene", which was released in 2012, means " Oikumene " - the entire inhabited world. It is inspired by music from all over the world. The British bands Fun-Da-Mental , the Zulu Choir The Mighty Zulu Nation, the Indian sarod player Rampur Rani and the French but African-born singer Julien Jacob took part in the recordings for the album . The album was recorded in studios in Saint-Petersburg, London and Paris. When designing the artwork, the images of the famous Russian painter Boris Indrikov were used. The album "Oikoumene" was released in Germany under the label Danse Macabre .
In 2015 the album "Vetvi" was released. "Vetvi", translated "branches", to be understood as branches of the tree of life - sacred tree that connects the three levels, heaven, earth and the underworld. The theme of the album is based on legends and myths of the northern peoples. The first song is sung in Old Norse . Videos were shot for two songs on the album Vetvi (branches) and Kukushka (cuckoo). The artwork for the album was designed by the Portuguese painter Elia Mervi.
collaboration
The collaboration between “Theodor Bastard” and the German composer Stefan Hertrich and his projects “SpiRitual” and “Shiva in Exile”, which combine the two styles of Ethno and Gothic , is particularly famous . The singer Jana Veva wrote and sang the lyrics for three pieces on the album "Pulse" from the project "SpiRitual" and for all compositions on the album "Nour" from the project Shiva in Exile.
On the sampler "... It Just Is (In Memoriam: John Balance)", which was released by the band Coil in memory of John Balance , there is a remake of the Coil song "Love Secret Domain", which was written by Theodor Bastard was edited in the style of a requiem. On September 23, 2005, Coil and Theodor Bastard gave a joint concert in St. Petersburg in memory of John Balance. At this concert, the second coil leader, Peter Christopherson, expressed his admiration for this remake.
