Theodor Thürmer (born May 4, 1890 in Graefendorf , † June 1, 1962 near Bad Reichenhall ) was a German forester . He became known to a larger audience primarily as a hunter and hunting writer.

Live and act

Theodor Thürmer, who came from Lower Franconia , headed the Mauth -Ost Forestry Office in the Bavarian Forest from 1931 . One of the traces that he left in the extensive forests between Lusen and Dreisesselberg is their professional development. Not least, he demonstrated his talent for planning with the “Teufelsbachstraße” built there.

In 1937 he moved to Bad Reichenhall, where he headed the Reichenhall-Nord forestry office until his retirement in 1955 . He was well aware of what he owed this important spa town as a forester. So he always approached the care of the surrounding forests from this point of view and took into account the needs of those seeking relaxation, hikers and tourists. This shaped the mountain forests under the Reiter Alm, in the crags of the Lattengebirge and on the Teisenberg . Through his work he gained a great reputation among the citizens.

However, Thürmer only gained greater fame outside of his Bavarian homeland after he retired from active forestry in 1955. The members of the Bavarian Forestry Association elected him on September 7, 1955 in Bayreuth as the successor to the surprisingly deceased chairman Oberlandforstmeister Karl Crug. As the Vice President of the German Forestry Association , his name became a household name in forestry at home and abroad.

In addition, Thürmer was a hunter of great mercy. He published his experiences in this regard in various hunting magazines in retirement. These original, folk and humorous descriptions made him a well-known and popular hunting writer who also gained notoriety beyond the actual forestry circles. Under the title The Seventh Ball. Jagd im Gebirg published his memoirs in 1960 in book form at Paul Parey Verlag .

For his retirement he had built a house in the solitude of the mountains outside Bad Reichenhall above the Saalaxis . There, Chief Forester Theodor Thürmer died on the morning of June 1, 1962 at the age of 73 after a serious illness of the consequences of a stroke .

Shortly after his death in January 1962, Theodor Thürmer received the Cross of Merit on ribbon .

His father (also called Theodor Thürmer) was once a gendarme in Lower Franconia and one of the six selected men who guarded Otto von Bismark during his spa stays in Bad Kissingen.

Quote

  • "Despite all the technical measures down to perfect craftsmanship, we must never forget to cultivate the great thoughts and goals of this profession and to drive them forward. Without the Prometheus idea, without a good shot of idealism, the true forester cannot do anything." - Theodor Thürmer in a speech during the conference of the Bavarian Forest Association in 1959 in Würzburg
