Life

Born as the son of a grand ducal domain administrator, Verhas attended lectures at Heidelberg University for a short time from 1827 before he decided to pursue painting. Following the Romantics and under the influence of the Heidelberg painters Fohr, Rottmann, and the Fries brothers, he turned to landscape painting .

After Verhas had taken lessons from the landscape painter Ernst Fries in Karlsruhe , he attended the Academy in Munich, where he chose Heinrich Heinlein as his model. The first attention was paid to a forest landscape exhibited in 1835, painted in a naturalistic way.

After completing his training, Verhas moved to Heidelberg, where he initially received orders for watercolors and drawings for copperplate engravings , illustrations and album leaves . When he returned to Munich, he created numerous smaller oil paintings that were acquired by art associations and private individuals. In 1856 Verhas returned to Heidelberg with his wife Mina (née Lutz). There he developed a busy artistic activity and gave lessons. In addition to his many oil paintings and watercolors, his many pencil drawings with Heidelberg motifs, which were very popular with tourists, date from this and the following period.

In 1863, Verhas stayed in Wertheim on behalf of the Prince of Löwenstein-Wertheim . There he made numerous drawings and watercolors for a portfolio, which, however, was never finished.

His grave in the Heidelberg Bergfriedhof consists of a small, natural stone corpus made of white marble, which is crowned with a cross.

In addition to many sketches and drawings, Verhas' estate also included around 400 oil paintings; he has also worked on works of opinion.
