Theodor Weber (physician)

Theodor Weber (born August 28, 1829 in Leipzig , † September 4, 1914 in Halle an der Saale ) was a German doctor .

Life

Coming from a widespread family of scholars - his father Ernst Heinrich Weber was an anatomist and university professor - studied medicine at the Universities of Göttingen and Leipzig. In the winter of 1850/51 he became a member of the Leipzig University Choir of St. Pauli . In 1854 he received his doctorate from the University of Leipzig with the dissertation De causis streptiuum in vasis sanguiferis observatum as a doctor of medicine. He then worked as an assistant at the Jakobshospital in Leipzig. In 1855 he qualified as a professor for internal medicine at the University of Leipzig and in 1858 became director of the Medical Polyclinic in Leipzig. In 1859 he received the title of associate professor . In 1861 Weber was appointed full professor for pathology and therapy at the University of Halle . At the same time he was head of the university policlinic and poor doctor of the city of Halle .

He proved himself in 1866 when the cholera epidemic occurred and in 1870/1871 as the doctor responsible for the hospitals in the city, for which he was made an honorary citizen in Halle in 1904 . After 1871 Weber played a key role in the planning for the university clinics on what is now Magdeburger Strasse. In 1890 he handed over the management of the clinic to Josef von Mering, and in 1904 Weber was released from teaching duties. In addition to his organizational tasks, Weber mainly dealt with the application of physical principles to medicine, such as research into blood circulation.

Honors

In 1878 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

He received the Red Eagle Order 2nd Class with Star and the Prussian Crown Order 2nd Class with Star. The ducal family of Anhalt appointed him commander first class of the House Order of Albrecht the Bear .

A street in Halle, Theodor-Weber-Strasse, was named after him.
