The city of Halle (Saale) has granted honorary citizenship to 33 people since 1833 .

In addition, Paul von Hindenburg , Adolf Hitler and Hermann Göring were made honorary citizens in 1933. These honors were revoked in May 1991.

During his time as Reich President, he particularly embodied the conservative forces in the country. By appointing Hitler as Chancellor, he contributed - unknowingly - to the downfall of the Weimar Republic.
