Richard Robert Rive (born December 26, 1864 in Naples , † November 23, 1947 in Halle (Saale) ) was first mayor from 1906 and mayor of the city of Halle from 1908 to 1933 .

Life

Richard Rive was born in Naples in 1864 as the son of the merchant Hugo Rive. After the death of the father, the mother moved with her children to Breslau , where Rive attended high school and then studied law. In 1888 he received his doctorate in law. He did the one-year military service and then passed the second state examination in law. In 1893 he became a court assessor in Breslau; from 1893 to 1899 he worked as a lawyer at the regional court there.

Rives political career began in 1899 as a salaried city ​​councilor in Wroclaw; he held this office until 1905. On November 3, 1905, he was elected First Mayor by the city council of Halle and took up this office on April 1 of the following year (official inauguration on April 2, 1906). Richard Robert Rive held his office as Lord Mayor, after two re-elections, until March 31, 1933, when he was released “for reasons of age” and at the same time made an honorary citizen of the city of Halle (magistrate resolution of August 9, 1932). Johannes Weidemann was his successor as Lord Mayor . Rive had taken a distant stance towards the National Socialists , so that the first post-war mayor Theodor Lieser (1900–1973) did not present the honorary citizenship letter to a ceremony until August 12, 1945 .

An honorary professor at the Law and Political Science Faculty of the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg held Rive of 6 April 1933 to the summer of 1935, he has been relieved of his teaching duties.

From 1906 to 1918 Rive was also a member of the Prussian mansion and from 1918 a member of the Provincial Parliament of the Province of Saxony and the Prussian State Council . In 1917/18 Rive belonged to the German Fatherland Party . From 1928 he was a member of the German National People's Party (DNVP).

Rive died on November 23, 1947 in Halle and was buried in the grave of his family in the Berlin-Lichtenberg cemetery.

During Rive's tenure, the city administration was modernized, for example today's Ratshof was built as a modern administrative building behind the former town hall. In addition, numerous purchases were made for the city, including Giebichenstein Castle (1921, establishment of a school of arts and crafts), the Reilsberg with the city's zoological garden , the Brandberge and in 1929 the Dölauer Heide . In 1945 the city of Halle named a promenade along the Saale between Giebichenstein Castle and Burgstrasse after the long-time mayor. The river bank bore this name until 1958, when the III.
