Karl Pretzsch (politician)

Karl Pretzsch (born August 15, 1896 in Halle (Saale) , † July 19, 1954 in Stralsund ) was a German politician . He was Lord Mayor of Halle (Saale) from 1946 to 1951.

Life

The son of a bricklayer learned after visiting the elementary school the profession of stone setter . After wandering as a craftsman from 1913 to 1915, he did military service from 1915 to 1918. He was discharged from military service in 1919, went back to work and joined the USPD in 1919 and the KPD in 1920 . From 1929 to 1933 he was a city councilor in Halle. He was unemployed from 1930 to 1935 and from 1935 to 1945 as a stone setter in the Meißner company in Halle. Pretzsch was involved in the communist resistance against the Nazi regime in Halle .

After the war ended in May 1945, Pretzsch worked again for the KPD and as a trade unionist in his hometown. In October 1945 he was appointed mayor of Halle by SMAD . In 1946 he became a member of the SED and elected Lord Mayor of Halle in the local elections in September 1946 . He held this position until 1951. From October 1948 to February 1949 he was a participant in the first course at the German Administration Academy in Forst Zinna . From 1950 to 1951 he was also a member of the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt . Pretzsch was expelled from the SED in 1951. He was accused of self-importance, he had made the party organization (BPO) of the city administration to his appendage. Not the party leadership, but he would have determined the “line” of the party.
