Hermann Lorenz Gerlinger (born July 14, 1931 in Würzburg ) is a German entrepreneur and art collector .

Life

Until 1987, Hermann Gerlinger managed a medium-sized house technology company in his hometown, which he had taken over from his father.

For over 50 years, Gerlinger collected works by the Brücke painters and thus brought together almost 1,000 works of art.

From 1995 to 2001 Hermann Gerlinger and his wife Hertha showed their collection on permanent loan in the Schleswig-Holstein State Museum at Gottorf Castle .

In the spring of 2001 the museum and the collector separated, after which he made the works available on permanent loan to the Moritzburg art museum Halle (Saale) . Numerous exhibitions from this collection took place in Halle (Saale) until 2017. In November 2016, the Kulturstiftung Sachsen-Anhalt , to which the art museum Moritzburg Halle (Saale) belongs, and Hermann Gerlinger announced that the long-term loan agreement would end in May 2017. The collector has used an exit clause intended for breaches of contract by Moritzburg. A self-portrait by Karl Schmitt-Rottluff was lost in the care of the museum beforehand .

At the beginning of March 2017, Hermann Gerlinger informed the public that his collection would be loaned to the Buchheim Museum, Bernried for a period of ten years with the option of an extension . The first exhibition opened on October 28, 2017 with the title Brückenschlag: Gerlinger - Buchheim . By merging Gerlinger's holdings with those of the Buchheim Museum, the group of artists founded in Dresden in 1905 has the most important holdings, alongside that of the Berliner Brücke Museum, with over 2,000 works.

Hermann Gerlinger's collection is dedicated to the painters of the Brücke: the founding members Ernst Ludwig Kirchner , Erich Heckel , Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Fritz Bleyl as well as the artists Emil Nolde , Hermann Max Pechstein , Cuno Amiet , Akseli Gallen-Kallela and Otto Mueller who joined later . In its systematic cohesion, the collection is almost unique. It brings together works from all creative phases of the artist - from the earliest beginnings to the common group style to individual late work. Thanks to his personal contact with the artist, Gerlinger was able to put together a dense collection of monographs, particularly on Karl Schmidt Rottluff. The holdings of Kirchner and Heckel are equal in terms of quantity and quality.

With his holistic approach to collecting, Gerlinger includes not only paintings, watercolors, drawings and prints but also documents, posters, invitations, bookplates , annual portfolios, sculptures and handicrafts by the Brücke artists. In total, the collection, which is still growing, comprises around 1,030 titles. There are currently 48 paintings by Brücke artists. Works from the African cultural area are also part of the inventory, with which the influence of non-European art on the bridge is to be documented. On this subject, the Moritzburg Art Museum Halle (Saale) organized the last presentation from the Hermann Gerlinger collection with the corresponding catalog in 2016/17.

Honors

In 1999 Hermann Gerlinger was awarded the honorary professorship of Schleswig-Holstein by the Schleswig-Holstein Prime Minister Heide Simonis "in recognition and appreciation of his art historical and journalistic work as well as his significant contributions to the research and documentation of German Expressionism " .

In October 2009, the Gerlingers were awarded honorary citizenship of the city of Halle (Saale) and in 2013 the Order of Merit of the State of Saxony-Anhalt . In June 2018 both received the Bavarian Order of Merit .
