Theodora Buettner

Theodora Büttner née Theodora Reichel (born June 17, 1930 in Thum ) is a German historian . Büttner researched the pre-colonial history of Africa and the anti-colonial liberation movement.

Life

Büttner, daughter of a shop assistant and a clerk takes , studied after the Abitur 1949-1953 history and English literature on teaching at the University of Leipzig. From 1946 to 1953 she was a member of the FDJ and then joined the SED . In the same year she became an assistant at the Institute for General History at the University of Leipzig.

1957 Büttner was with a thesis on the medieval socio-religious movement of Circumcellions doctorate and in 1965 with a study on the socio-economic structure Adamaous in the 19th century habilitation . In 1966 she became a lecturer in the history of Africa at the Africa Institute at the University of Leipzig, in 1968 full professor for the history of Africa at the Africa Institute, and from 1969 at the African and Middle Eastern Studies section at the University of Leipzig. From 1988 to 1992 Büttner was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . In 1992 she took early retirement . She was married to the Africanist and university professor Kurt Hermann Büttner (* 1926 Königsberg † 1999 Leipzig, GND 1070503185 ).
