Think About Mutation was a crossover band from Leipzig that existed from 1992 to 2002. The band was one of the first to mix rave and techno elements with metal guitars in 1992 . Groups like Rammstein were influenced by Think About Mutation in their early development.

Think About Mutation released five albums and six singles.

The cover of Frankie Goes to Hollywood -Klassikers Two Tribes from the album High Life was the (domestic) official soundtrack of the strategy game Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun .

history

Think About Mutation was founded in May 1992 at ZORO in Leipzig. A few months later there was already the first concert in the Connewitz Klub Zoro, where the group later rehearsed. Directed by Mike Stolle, the drummer for Messer Banzani , the first demo tape House Bastards was made in the studio bunker in the Zoro in late autumn 1992 , on which RJKK Hänsch from the Friends of Italian Opera can be heard as a guest singer in three songs. The tape sells very well and gives the band numerous concert opportunities in East Germany. Think About Mutation's good reputation as a strong live band earned it the interest of several record companies. The band opts for a contract with the Berlin label Modern Music, for whose sub-label Dynamica the Berlin producer Jor Mulder (including And One , Oomph! ) Recorded the debut album Motorrazor . A serious misunderstanding arose: Mulder wanted to form Think About Mutation into a noisy industrial band in the style of the then very current Ministry , but the group itself wanted to create something new by merging metal riffs and rave electronics and more like a mixture sound from The Prodigy and Slayer . Motorrazor was therefore not a great success as a CD, although Think About Mutation broke attendance records in the club scene with concerts.

In 1994 Mike Stolle recorded and mixed the second album Housebastards . It shows the band's rave metal in the right light for the first time, Think About Mutation is playing numerous concerts all over Europe, sometimes together with Helmet (band) , Depeche Mode , Oomph! , The Krupps , Moby and Godflesh . The sound is further perfected on the album Hellraver (producer: Rüdiger V. Schlüter), released in May 1996, and for the first time breakbeat and punk borrowings have also been incorporated.

The company Motor Music is attentive to Think About Mutation and the band offers a contract. For the major album Virus , which will be released in February 1998, the band has to change its image: Instead of the previous underground charm, a stylish appearance appears, which the band does not get in the eyes of many fans. The music on Virus is comparatively pop-oriented and less harsh - Think About Mutation still has a difficult time with the mainstream audience, but sometimes gets it with the regular audience. The abbreviation ((tam)) with double brackets, introduced for the first time as an abbreviation of the band name, is new .

In mid-1998 the band went into the studio in Berlin with Billy Gould from Faith No More to produce the track Two Tribes on a trial basis . Gould then produced the fifth album Highlife in San Francisco . Motor's expectations are enormous after this effort, but the success is comparatively low, although the single Two Tribes has seen numerous TV appearances. The band loses their record deal and takes a break while the singer Ralf Donis decides to leave the group. The remaining musicians do not want to look for a replacement and say goodbye in spring 2002 after 10 years with the Germany tour Enough is Enough , they gave their last concert at Conne Island in Leipzig. A planned best-of CD of the same name will no longer be released.

After the dissolution

Guitarist Joey and keyboardist Steffen Gräfe formed in 2006 for the new project The Sonic Boom Foundation . In the meantime they played with Schwarwel in the band Born Cool. Guitarist Heavyette currently plays in the Leipzig metalcore band Myra . Bassist Rajko Gohlke started the electric surf crash project Microwave . In 2004 RJKK Hänsch aka Ray van Zeschau brought him to Dresden for a one-time performance by the Friends of Italian Opera . Then he engaged their drummer Ralph Qno Kunze for microwave. In 2007 Ray van Zeschau brought him into his 50's psychometal project The Distorted Elvises . In 2009 he started as a guitarist for Rummelsnuff and again as a bassist for the newly formed Friends of Italian Opera . In 2010 he received the offer to fill the vacant position of the reunited Knorkator , which he accepted. In May 2015 Joey, Steffen, Rajko & Heavyette founded the TOTL XS CTRL project. In December 2017 guitarist Joey joins the Friends of Italian Opera.
