Thiodiglycol or bis (2-hydroxyethyl) sulfide , also 2,2'-sulfanediyldiethanol, is a precursor product in the production of mustard gas ( mustard ). The bis (2-hydroxyethyl) sulfide is chlorinated to mustard by heating with thionyl chloride in a benzene solution.
Under the synonymous name 2,2′-thiodiethanol, thiodiglycol is used as an embedding medium in light microscopy . Since it is miscible with water, the refractive index can be continuously adjusted between that of water (1.33) and that of immersion oil (1.52).
Thiodiglycol is also used as a solvent for dyes, where it increases the color intensity and dispersibility.
