Life

Thomas Antretter was born on November 27, 1967 in Vienna and grew up next to his brother Norbert in Purkersdorf in the Wienerwald region, where he also received his initial schooling. After graduating from high school , which he graduated with distinction, from 1987 to 1993 he studied general mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Vienna . He then worked as a software engineer and programmer at Enter Software, Inc. in Menlo Park , California , from August 1993 to December 1994 , before completing his doctorate at Christian- Rammerstorfer in March 1995 through the mediation of his former thesis supervisor, Franz G. Rammerstorfer . Doppler Laboratory for Micromechanics of Materials at the Montan University Leoben began. He graduated with distinction in April 1998 and received the Josef Krainer Prize for his dissertation on Micromechanical Modeling of High Speed Tool Steel the following year . From September 1998 onwards, Antretter filled the recently vacated position as a university assistant at the Institute for Mechanics at the Montan University Leoben.

In the same year he began his habilitation , which he completed in March 2004 with the thesis Numerical investigation of the martensitic transformation in steels in the field of mechanics of materials at the Montanuni. Subsequently, he appeared as a lecturer or associate professor for mechanics, where he mainly dealt with the topics of strength and breakage of steels in tool applications. In both areas he was considered internationally recognized early in his university career. On March 18, 2005 he was awarded the Josef Krainer Appreciation Prize by the Styrian Memorial for his efforts in mechanics . On April 6, 2006, he was awarded the Adolf Martens Prize by the Adolf Martens Fund eV , which is awarded every two years to sponsors of materials science, materials research and testing, and safety technology.

After he had supervised the mechanical strength theory and finite element training at the Institute of Mechanics since 1998 and then appeared as a lecturer or associate professor, Antretter took over the professorship for mechanics at the Montanuniversität Leoben on December 1, 2009. On October 17, 2014, he was awarded the prize for excellent teaching by the Austrian Students' Union of the Montan University Leoben . To date (as of May 11, 2019) he supervised 54 theses from 2009 to 2019 and has been involved in 181 publications since 1996.
