Thomas C. McCreery

Thomas Clay McCreery (* 12. December 1816 in Owensboro , Kentucky ; † 10. July 1890 in Owensboro, Kentucky) was an American politician of the Democratic Party .

After finishing school, McCreery took up law studies . He graduated from Center College in Danville in 1837 , was then admitted to the bar and worked as a lawyer in Frankfort . He later returned to his hometown Owensboro, where he also worked as a writer.

His first attempts to take up political office were unsuccessful. It failed in the election to the US House of Representatives in 1842 , again two years later. In the years 1852, 1856 and 1860 he was the Electoral College elector for the Democrats . On February 19, 1868, he finally became a US Senator when he was elected to succeed the resigned James Guthrie . He ended his term of office, which lasted until March 3, 1871, but missed re-election. In 1872, however, McCreery returned to the Senate as the second seat of the Kentucky state. After six years, he left on March 3, 1879; he had not made himself available for re-election.

Thomas McCreery retired from politics and lived on his farm in Daviess County before returning to Owensboro, where he died in 1890.
