Thomas Götz (diplomat)
Thomas Götz (born May 17, 1953 in Schwäbisch Gmünd ) is a German diplomat who was ambassador to Finland from 2011 to 2014 and ambassador to Slovakia from 2014 to 2016 . From 2016 to 2018 he was ambassador to Norway .
Life
Thomas Götz studied 1973-1979 German , English Literature and American Studies at the universities in Tübingen and Newcastle-upon-Tyne . With his dissertation "The brittle idyll: Peter Huchel's poetry between magic and disenchantment" he was awarded a doctorate in 1998 at the FernUniversität Hagen. phil. PhD. In 1980 he joined the Foreign Service . After the career examination, he worked from 1982 to 1983 in the foreign policy department of the Federal Chancellery under the Federal Chancellors Helmut Schmidt and Helmut Kohl . Thomas Götz is married and has one daughter.
From 1983 to 1986 he headed the economic department at the German Consulate General in Hong Kong . He then worked in the same position from 1986 to 1988 at the German Embassy in Bucharest . From 1991 to 1994 he worked for the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations in Geneva . After working in the Foreign Office in Bonn , he was Deputy Ambassador to the German Embassy in Athens from 1998 to 2002 . From 2002 to 2006 he headed the “Science and Universities” department at the Foreign Office in Berlin. In 2008 he was appointed representative for foreign studies policy and deputy head of the cultural department at the Federal Foreign Office.
From October 2011 to July 2014 Götz was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Finland . In May 2014 Götz was awarded an honorary doctorate in philosophy from Åbo Akademi, the Swedish-speaking university in Turku, for his services to the university's humanities faculty.
From July 2014 to the end of June 2016, Thomas Götz represented the Federal Republic of Germany as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Slovak Republic . From July 2016 Götz was ambassador to the Kingdom of Norway for two years .
