Thomas Gerlach (journalist)

Thomas Gerlach (* 1964 in Burg ) is a German journalist , editor of the daily newspaper taz and author of several books.

Live and act

The young Gerlach worked in a agricultural cooperative as agriculturist or Mechanisator and later as a projectionist in a church environment (so-called " film missionary "). From 1987 or 1988 he studied Protestant theology at the Theological Seminary in Leipzig and, after the fall of the Wall, at the Ruhr University in Bochum . He completed his theology studies with a diploma. He then continued his training at the Protestant School of Journalism in Berlin .

During his studies in 1992/1993 he had already taken a study visit to the University of the Belarusian capital Minsk , from where he traveled several times through various CIS countries.

From 1999 he worked for ten years with a focus on GDR history, today's East Germany, the German-Polish border area and all of Eastern Europe as well as church affairs as a reporter for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and its Sunday edition , for Die Welt along with the Sunday edition and also the daily newspaper . Research trips as an author have taken him several times to Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Romania and Moldova.

Since 2003, Gerlach has also worked on the twice-yearly journal of the SED-State research association at the Free University of Berlin . Because of his travels through Eastern Europe, he has published several travel guides with Trescher Verlag since 2005 .

Gerlach lives with his wife and two children in Berlin and has been editor of the taz since 2009: first in the "main taz department, which is responsible for the most important topics of the day" and since 2012 in the report & research department.

Awards

In 2005 Gerlach received the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Media Prize in the print section for the taz report Der Freischütz von Peetsch .
