Thomas Hansen (born February 13, 1976 in Oslo ; † September 5, 2007 ) was a Norwegian musician who performed under the stage name St. Thomas and Saint Thomas .

He was also a promising youth soccer player with Skeid Oslo but gave up his career in favor of music.

On September 10, 2007, he was found dead. The cause of death, according to the family, was an unfortunate mix of prescribed psychotropic drugs. In an interview with the music newspaper Visions (No. 184 of July 2008) Sivert Høyem , singer from Madrugada , mentioned that Thomas Hansen committed suicide.

Music career

Beginning

Thomas Hansen began his music career in 1999 with the band Emily Lang while he was studying in Bergen . The band took part in the 2000 By: larm concert in Bergen. The gang's first demo disc contained, among other things, “Corner Man”, which also appeared on the promotional record of the By: Larm concert in Bergen in 2000. After the Øyafestival 2000 the band split up.

Solo artist

He celebrated his breakthrough as a solo artist at the 1999 Quart Festival , where he played demos as an encore and was discovered by the record company Racing Junior . After the release of his debut album Mysterious Walks (2000), he gave up his previous job as a postman and earned his living with music.

Hansen has had the pleasure of performing with a number of different artists from different locations. Bosse from Ai Phoenix sat on drums for several years, Petter Pogo from Jokke og Valentinerne played bass for a while, Espen Mellingen from Ai Phoenix and Poor Rich Ones played guitar for a few years, and in spring 2007 The Captain & Me were both opening act and backing band.

In 2002 , Hansen was the first Norwegian to play a concert at the Royal Albert Hall , opening up for Lambchop . For a while he lived in Berlin , where he also wrote music.

Thomas Hansen was inspired by Elliott Smith, Will Oldham , Sebadoh, Neil Young and The Byrds , among others .

In addition to his own records, Thomas also wrote a new song for his football club Skeid Oslo .

At the end of November 2011 a benefit 7 inch was released, with the original version of "The Cool Song" on the A side and two cover versions by the Cologne bands Schreng Schreng & La La and Hello Piedpiper on the B side. The proceeds of this 7inch will benefit the St. Thomas Mindfond, a foundation for children and young people with mental health problems.

Career highlights

  • 1998 : Move from Oslo to Bergen and start of the band Emily Lang, which appeared at the By: larm concert and the Øyafestival i 2000, among others.
  • 1999 : Contract with the record company Racing Junior after playing some demos during the encores at the Quart Festival.
  • 2000 : Release of the debut album "Mysterious Walks" under the name St. Thomas.
  • 2001 : Breakthrough with "The Cornerman EP", which reached 8th place in the Norwegian charts and was sold more than 3500 times in Norway. In the same year “I'm Coming Home” was later released, which the German record company City Slang released on the European market.
  • 2002 : Appearance at the Royal Albert Hall as the first Norwegian to support the American band Lambchop. Another appearance at the Roskilde Festival.
  • 2004 : Publication of "Let's Grow Together - The Comeback Of St. Thomas". In connection with the publication, he spoke openly about his alcohol and anxiety problems.
  • 2006 : “There's Only One of Me” received various reviews in Norway, was named “Album Of The Month” in Uncut.
  • 2007 : "A Mouse In A Crowded House" was in production at the time of his death and will be Saint Thomas' seventh studio album, with 12 selected songs out of 80 new.
