Squarepusher is the stage name of the British musician and bassist Thomas "Tom" Jenkinson (born January 17, 1975 in Chelmsford , Essex , United Kingdom ), who is best known for his drill 'n' bass music. Jenkinson also released recordings under the names Chaos AD , Alroy Road Tracks , Duke Of Harringay and T Maxx .

Life

Jenkinson is a producer of electronic music , which roughly belongs to the genre IDM or electronica , partly also jazz and acid techno . His musical development was largely shaped by jazz. He is a virtuoso bassist and also plays drums and a number of other musical instruments. The jazz influence can be clearly heard on most of his recordings. He is under contract with Warp Records . He was discovered by Aphex Twin , who initially signed him to his Rephlex Records label . Both have a close friendship. He achieved great recognition with his music in the scene and became one of the most famous representatives of alternative electronic music.

The main influences of Jenkinson's style are acid techno, jazz, IDM and drum and bass . Chopped up, often very fast beats in combination with jazzy basses and synthesizer lines stand out in many pieces. His style has been sometimes referred to in the media as drill 'n' bass , a term invented for the music on some of Aphex Twin's records. His most influential albums are "Hard Normal Daddy" (1997) and "Go Plastic" (2001). The maxi “My Red Hot Car”, which was extracted from “Go Plastic”, reached number 20 in the British charts in 2001 as the greatest commercial success. While on the first he developed a variety of his style that was relatively strongly influenced by jazz , “Go Plastic” was a very homogeneous sounding, purely synthetic work with a technoid sound. On other LPs his music oscillated between acid techno and drill 'n' bass. On the CD "Music Is Rotted One Note", however, he is mainly oriented towards the jazz rock of the early 70s and makes little use of electronic effects and sound generators, but mostly uses conventional instruments such as drums and bass, all of which he plays himself . On his album “Hello Everything” you can hear more catchy melodies and synthesizer sounds that are partly reminiscent of Kraftwerk , with the beats being kept simpler and more subtle. In contrast to the usual electronic pop music , however, more complex musical techniques such as key modulations appear (example: title “Rotate Electrolyte”). The use of the acoustic guitar, which is atypical for electronic music, is also exceptional . This experimental and eclectic approach has developed into a stylistic device of Squarepusher's music over the years. On the CD "Just A Souvenir", released in 2008, you can even hear influences from metal .

During live performances, Squarepusher plays a fretless electric bass and on his laptop .

Jenkinson's brother Andrew "Andy" Jenkinson also produces music under the pseudonym Ceephax Acid Crew .
