Thomas Pendry, Baron Pendry PC (born June 10, 1934 in Broadstairs , Kent ) is a British Labor politician.

Life

He attended King's School at St Augustine's Abbey , Canterbury , and studied at Oxford University . He worked as a functionary for the trade union NUPE and worked as an engineer before he was elected to parliament in 1970.

Pendry was an MP in the House of Commons for the constituency of Stalybridge and Hyde from 1970 to 2001 . He served as a whip for the opposition from 1971 to 1974 . He served in the Callaghan cabinet from 1976 to 1979 as Junior Lord Commissioner of the Treasury and Assistant Government Whip . He subsequently became Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Northern Ireland .

In 1979, Pendry became shadow minister for sport and tourism at the suggestion of John Smith . He held this position until the Labor Party took over government in 1997. Pendry was the only member of the shadow cabinet who did not hold a government function.

In 2000 Pendry became a member of the Privy Council on the recommendation of Tony Blair . He did not run for the 2001 general election. Successor in his constituency was James Purnell . Instead, he was raised to Life Peer as Baron Pendry , of Stalybridge in the County of Greater Manchester , in 2001 and has been a member of the House of Lords ever since .

Lord Pendry is Parliamentary Adviser to The Stamford Grup Ltd. Parliamentary Consultant to Arrowcraft Group plc. President of Oyston Steel Estates Ltd , President of Football Foundation Ltd. and advisor to the Tameside District Council Sports Trust .

Honors

1995, appointed Metropolitan Borough of Tameside Pendry for freeman ( Honorary Freeman ) and Lord of the Manor of Mottram in Longdendale . In addition, the square in front of the old market hall on Trinity Street in Stalybridge was named Lord Pendry Square . Stalybridge Celtic football club named one of its stands The Lord Tom Pendry Stand .

Sports

Pendry has been exercising regularly since his service with the Royal Air Force . In February 2003 he was named President of the Football Foundation. and he continues to serve in this position. Pendry learned boxing from a Benedictine monk, became an Oxford Blue, and won a Royal Air Force boxing title.
