The former Thormanngut on the shores of Lake Biel

The Thormanngut in Wingreis municipality Twann-Tüscherz BE is a former vineyard on Lake Biel . The Rebhaus is now a museum and offers its rooms for exhibitions and events.

location

The small hamlet of Wingreis is located on the sunny side of the shores of Lake Biel and consists of a few wineries and residential buildings. The Rebhaus originally had direct access to the lake and its own shipping area. The connection was cut off by the construction of the double-lane SBB railway line Biel-Neuchâtel and the A5 motorway with noise protection wall. This saves the old town center from having to deal with heavy traffic.

history

Wingreis was mentioned as early as the 13th century. Engelberg Abbey and Fraubrunnen Monastery had owned vineyards there since 1344. Wingreis belonged to the Twann lordship and came from this to Bern in 1487. Rulers from the Bernese Schütz, Zeender and Sager families are known from the 16th century. Hans Rudolf Sager , later mayor of Bern, had been the sole owner since 1587 . The beginnings of the Wingreis vineyard can be traced back to him. Through his daughter Maria, the property came to Johann Anton Güder in 1623, after his death, who gave the house its current form in 1624 and had some rooms inside colored with colorful ornaments and the so-called drinking room with dancing couples. The Rebgut was then passed on to the von Büren and von Erlach families . Under the Erlach, the interiors received first grisaille paintings , then painted wall coverings. After the von Wattenwyl and Effinger families , those from Forer followed. Under Franz Albrecht von Forer, who took over the estate in 1810, several rooms were modernized, as evidenced by an original classicist hand-printed wallpaper. Through the von Steiger family, the property came to the Thormann family in 1850, who maintained the entire vineyard for 122 years. The Rebhaus was given to the Canton of Bern in 1972 for road construction and, thanks to its good state of preservation, was not sacrificed to traffic. While the Engelberggut to the east had to give way.

Rebhaus Foundation

The Rebhaus Wingreis Foundation was founded in 1973 by the federal government, the canton of Bern and the Bielersee interest group, with the aim of acquiring and maintaining the valuable building and making it accessible to the public. From 1972 to 1981 the restoration was carried out in cooperation with the cantonal monument preservation department and the historical rooms were furnished with authentic furniture from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. In 1980 winemakers from Wingreis and the surrounding area founded the Rebhauskeller association and offer their products to visitors in the historic cellar rooms with the old "Trüel".
