Thorstein Elias Hjaltelin , also Thorstein Ilia Hjaltalín or earlier Dorstein Illia Hialtalin , actually Icelandic Þorsteinn Elias Hjaltalín (* 1771 in Iceland , † 1817 in Halle ) was an Icelandic miniature and landscape painter who worked for the Stobwassersche lacquer manufacturer in Braunschweig for over 20 years .

life and work

Thorstein Elias Hjaltelin was born in Iceland as the 16th child of his parents. In 1789, at the age of 18, he left the island for Europe . After being shipwrecked and thus destitute, he first came to Danzig via Denmark , from where he finally reached Braunschweig in 1792 via numerous detours . The manufacturer Johann Heinrich Stobwasser , who was already known for his lacquerware beyond the borders of the Duchy of Braunschweig , accepted him and recognized his talent as a painter . He let Hjaltelin learn German and introduced him to the famous landscape painter Pascha Johann Friedrich Weitsch , who lived in the nearby Salzdahlum . He trained Hialtalin for three years, and the Icelander also had access to the art and picture gallery of Duke Anton Ulrichs von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel in Salzdahlum Castle , whose works influenced his later works.

Hjaltelin brought it to great artistry, especially in the representation of landscapes, in which he partially surpassed his master. After 1795 he worked successfully as a copyist and miniature painter for the Stobwassersche lacquerware factory until the end of his life . His work, some of which have survived, soon made him known beyond the city limits. In 1800 (according to another source 1804) he married in Braunschweig. The marriage remained childless. His wife survived him by 40 years and died in 1856. From 1802 Hjaltelin made several trips from Braunschweig, for example to Dresden and Upper Lusatia , where he created two preserved landscapes in the Dutch style.
