Jack of Hearts with Two Ladies (original title: Three's Company ) is an American sitcom television series that was created between 1977 and 1984. It is about a bachelor ( John Ritter ) who lives in a flat share with two friends in Santa Monica ( California ) due to a housing shortage . In order to convince his conservative landlord, however, the bachelor has to untruthfully pretend to be homosexual . The subject of the series is the entanglements and errors that arise from the purely friendly (platonic) relationship of the three flat share residents, as well as the fact that the landlord spies on them and repeatedly encounters embarrassing situations that the bachelor's pretended homosexuality causes seem to confirm.

Jack Tripper is a bachelor who served in the Navy before moving into the women's shared apartment. He is excellent at cooking and is also very humorous. In order to be allowed to stay in the women's shared apartment, he pretends to the landlord that he is not interested in women. Jack is one of the two characters that appears in all seasons.

Stanley Roper is the landlord of the apartment where Jack, Janet and Chrissy live. Stanley is married to Helen, who always wants sex with him even though he's disinterested. This role is only a main character for the first three seasons.
Helen Roper , wife of the landlord Stanley Roper and constantly frustrated that her husband does not want to have sex with her, although she has a romantic streak. Unlike her husband, she is informed from the start that Jack is not homosexual. Along with the role of Stanley, the role of Helen was also eliminated after the third season of the series.
Ralph Furley is the "idiot" landlord of the flat share from the fourth season, who tries in vain to arrive at the female sex. He stands in for his brother Bart, who was originally supposed to take the post of landlord. Main character from the fourth season.
Larry Dallas is Jack's neighbor and best friend. He is a used car dealer by profession and of Greek descent; his real name is Dalliapolis. To get the women to bed, he comes up with a lot. Recurring character from the second season.

Background information
The series is a US adaptation of the English series A Man in the House . The two spin-off series that followed Jack of Hearts with two women also had English models. The series George and Mildred was the inspiration for Zwei Weird Vogel , Jacks Bistro was the new version of Robin's Nest .
Three pilot episodes were shot for the series until the ABC executive David Silverman gave his OK for the start of production of the first season - this was unique on US television until then. In the first pilot episode, the later "Jack" actor John Ritter played "David", Valerie Curtin was "Jenny" and Suzanne Zenor played the role of "Samantha". In the second pilot, the roles of "Jack", "Janet" and "Chrissy" were introduced, but Susan Lanier played "Chrissy".

Up until 1982 Herzbube ran with two women in the evening program of the American television station ABC , after which the broadcast of the last two seasons was taken over by local channels . After that, the series was repeated several times on cable television (e.g. on TBS , Nick at Nite and TV Land ).
In Germany, the series was shown from 1992 on the recently launched channel “Der Kabelkanal” (today: kabel eins ). For the first time in its entirety, except for the two “Best Of” specials, ProSieben broadcast the series in the early evening program, after which it was a repeat on Kabel Eins until 1997 . After a long break, they were on Family TV and the internet broadcaster blizz in 2016 .
Offshoot
Jack of hearts with two women resulted in two less successful series. Already in 1979, when the end of the main series was still in sight, Two Weird Birds ( The Ropers , 28 episodes) was created, which was discontinued after two seasons in 1980. After the end of production of Jack of Hearts with Two Ladies , the story of Jack Tripper in the series Jacks Bistro ( Three's a Crowd , 22 episodes), also known as Three are one too many , was continued. But as for the first offshoot , the end came very early - after 22 episodes, this series was also ended in 1985.
