The Tianxingzhou Bridge ( Chinese 天 兴 洲 长江 大桥 , Pinyin Tiānxīngzhōu Cháng Jiāng Dàqiáo ) is a combined road and rail bridge over the Yangtze River in Wuhan in the Chinese province of Hubei . It is part of the Chinese high-speed program and carries the tracks of the Beijing – Guangzhou high-speed line and a six-lane expressway.
history
In 1957, the Wuhan-Yangtze Bridge opened the first bridge over the Yangtze. This bridge is also a combined road and rail bridge and has two tracks. In the course of time, the volume of transport between Beijing and Guangzhou grew significantly, and the existing bridge was no longer suitable for high-speed traffic in particular. While the second Wuhan-Yangtze Bridge had been used to remedy the increasing road traffic in 1995, construction of a second railway bridge in Wuhan did not begin until September 2004 with the Tianxingzhou Bridge.
The builder of the bridge was the Chinese Ministry of Railways, the construction of the bridge, which was split into two lots, was carried out by the companies China Railway Construction (CRCC) and Zhongtie Major Bridge Engineering (MBEC). The construction was supervised by the French engineering company Systra . The Chinese Ministry of Railways paid 80 percent of the construction costs of 2.7 billion yuan (the equivalent of 270 million euros ), the remaining 20 percent was raised by the city of Wuhan.
The steel structure was completed in February 2008, so that the laying of the railway line and the roadway could begin in June 2008. The bridge was completed in March 2009 and opened to traffic in December of the same year.

The bridge crosses the Yangtze River in the east of Wuhan City, making use of Tianxingzhou Island in the middle of the river, which is responsible for the name of the bridge. Through the island, the bridge is divided into a northern and a southern river crossing. The span of the bridge in the north is 80 meters, while the striking cable-stayed bridge with a span of 506 meters is arranged in the south. The total length of the bridge is 4,657 meters, 2,638 meters of which are road and rail on top of each other, and the remaining length is 40 meters apart. The six-lane expressway is on the upper level, the four-track railway line on the lower level. Of high-speed trains can be reached h on the bridge at speeds up to 250 km /. 1535 pillars were built over the entire length, most of which have one of four standardized diameters of 1.50 m, 2 m, 2.50 m or 3.40 m. The two large pylons of the cable-stayed bridge in A-geometry are 188.5 meters high. The bridge is a rare example of a cable-stayed bridge with three levels of rope. On each cable 16 are plane carrying cables arranged. In this way a load capacity of 20,000 tons is achieved.
