Tías is one of the seven municipalities on the Canary Island of Lanzarote and is located in the southeast of the island.

Residents

19,658 permanent residents and 22,485 guests or tourists live in the municipality (as of 2014), the capital of the same name has 5,319 inhabitants. The largest town, however, is Puerto del Carmen (also called La Tiñosa by the locals ). Tías is the municipality with the highest proportion of foreigners on the island (38.5 percent in November 2006). The municipality, which had fewer than 3,500 inhabitants in 1981, reached 10,000 inhabitants for the first time in 1995 and has doubled their number since then.

history

The name of the city of Tías comes from the great aunts of the former governor of Gran Canaria , Don Alonso Fajardo . Their names were Doña Francisca and Doña Hernan Fajardo . At first the city was called Tias de Fajardo (the aunts of Fajardo), which was shortened to Tías.

In the La Vega de Tegoyo valley belonging to the municipality there are mansions in the old colonial style, such as the Casa Pereyra .

politics

Politically, the municipality has been dominated since the 2011 election by the conservative Partido Popular , which held eight of the 17 seats on the municipal council and provided the municipality leader José Francisco Hernández. In the elections in May 2015 , the PP could hardly change its dominant position and still has eight seats on the municipal council, while the social democratic PSOE shrank from seven to four seats and Nueva Canarias was able to win two seats for the first time.

Art and literature

In El Taller de Arte (German art workshop) near the village of Conil , exhibitions of contemporary art , performances, readings and concerts have taken place regularly since 2002 .

The Portuguese poet José Saramago moved to Tías in 1993 in protest after the conservative Portuguese government Caraco Silva removed his novel The Gospel According to Jesus Christ (1991) from the nomination list for a book award because of alleged violations of religious sentiments. He lived and worked here until his death in 2010.
