action

Brad Cohen has had Tourette's syndrome since childhood . This disease makes him move uncontrollably and make sounds. When he was six years old, his mother, Ellen, went to a psychiatrist with him , but he was at a loss and unable to explain the symptoms. Only after doing her own research does she find what she is looking for and report her diagnosis to the psychiatrist. He agrees and explains that there is no cure for this. Ellen is devastated because her son is increasingly conspicuous in school and has problems, especially since his teachers react with incomprehension. After Brad's visit to a self-help group , he decides that, unlike the other members of the self-help group, he will become successful. That makes him dream of becoming a teacher himself.

As an adult, he would like to make this dream come true and applies for a position as a teacher, but because of his handicap, he is rejected several times before he receives an offer. On his first day, Brad explains his Tourette syndrome to the children and does his job successfully. Among other things, he helps his student Thomas with reading and has a beneficial effect on little Heather, who has terminal cancer. Another child is taken out of Brad's class by his father because he fears Brad might influence and distract them too much.

Brad later meets Nancy on an online dating website and invites her to his mother Ellen's house for Thanksgiving . Although he is in love with Nancy, he first tells his mother that he is worried that Nancy will disturb his tics . Ellen encourages him and tells him not to let his tics ruin his relationship. Eventually, Brad is selected for the Teacher of the Year award and receives the award in the presence of his family, friends and students. He then did his master’s degree and married his girlfriend Nancy in 2006.
