Tideman Berck (* in the 15th century ; † July 7, 1521 in Lübeck ) was a merchant and mayor of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.

Life

Tideman Berck was the son of Heinrich Berck, a citizen of Lübeck . He is first mentioned around 1486 as an elderly man of the merchants at Stalhof in London . In 1489 he was elected to the Lübeck council and represented the city as councilor together with councilor Heinrich Witte in the legation to Narva (1497) with the aim of reopening the Hanseatic merchant court there. In 1501 he was appointed one of the mayors of the Lübeck council. In 1503 he and the mayor Hartwig von Stiten took part in negotiations with Duke Friedrich von Schleswig-Holstein in Lübeck, during which the German-Danish relationship was to be clarified. Jens Andersen Beldenak , the Bishop of Odense , announced to him the intention to ratify the agreements with which the disagreements about the violation of Lübeck's trade privileges should be settled. In 1504 he concluded the first minting contract with Hamburg and Lüneburg for Lübeck (see: Wendischer Münzverein ). After the Hanseatic Day in Lübeck in 1507, he traveled to Nykøbing together with Mayor David Divessen to negotiate peace with the Danish king in the Lübeck feud . As a merchant he was still active in his own shops in 1508. His marriage to a daughter of the businessman Heinrich Möller remained childless. She brought him a dowry of 4,000 Lübische Marks . Berck lived in the house at Breite Str. 25 and had been a member of the circle society since 1501 . He was buried in the choir of the Marienkirche in Lübeck. A stained glass window donated by him for the choir in this church was destroyed in the air raid on Lübeck on March 29, 1942 ; it was at last between the two towers. A chapel for the Holy Spirit Hospital was also donated from his estate .
