Tieton ( taɪ.ətɒn ) is a city ( City ) in Yakima County in the State of Washington . As of the 2010 United States Census , Tieton had 1,191 residents.
In recent years Tieton has experienced an economic decline as the fruit warehouses became less and less used. A Seattle attorney and the founding president of the art publisher Marquand Books invested in the city in 2007 and wanted to revive it with a project they called “Mighty Tieton”.
History
Tieton was officially recognized on June 5, 1942. It takes its name from the Tieton River and means "roaring water" (German for "roaring water").

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 2.12 km², which does not include water.
Tieton is located near the confluence of the Tieton River and the Naches River .
climate
The climate region in which Tieton is located is characterized by large seasonal temperature differences with warm to hot (and often humid) summers and cold (sometimes extremely cold) winters. According to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification , it is a humid continental climate (abbreviated to "Dfb").

2010 Census
As of the 2010 census , Tieton had 1,191 residents, 358 households and 279 families. The population density was 560.8 per km ². There were 385 housing units at an average density of 181.3 per km².
The population consisted of 59.9% whites , 0.3% African American , 2.4% Indian , 0.3% Asian , 0.1% Pacific islanders , 31.9% from other "races" and 5.3% from two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 64.4% of the population.
Of the 358 households, 54.2% had children under the age of 18, 51.7% were run by married couples living together , 19.3% by single mothers and 7% by single fathers; 22.1% were non-families. 16.2% of the households were singles and 7.3% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 3.33 and the average family size was 3.67.
The median age in the city was 29.2 years. 33.8% of the population were under 18, 10.6% between 18 and 24, 28.7% between 25 and 44, 19.8% between 45 and 64 and 7 65 years or older. 49.5% of the population were men and 50.5% women.
Census 2000
As of the 2000 census , Tieton had 1,154 residents, 341 households and 267 families. The population density was 586.3 per km ². There were 363 housing units at a mean density of 184.4 per km².
The population was 54.07% White , 0.17% African American , 1.39% Native American , 0.69% Asian , 0.09% Pacific Islander , 41.33% from other "races" and 2.25% from two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 54.33% of the population.
Of the 341 households, 52.2% had children under the age of 18, 61% were run by married couples living together and 13.8% by single mothers; 21.7% were non-families. 18.5% of households were singles and 9.1% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 3.38 and the average family size was 3.88 people.
The median age in the city was 26 years. 37.2% of the population were under 18, 11.4% between 18 and 24, 20.5% between 25 and 44, 14.2% between 45 and 64 and 6.7 65 years or older. There were 99.3 men for every 100 women, and 94.4 men for every 100 women over the age of 18.
All information on median income relates to the median. The median household income was US $ 30,052 and that of families was US $ 34,583. Men had a median income of US $ 24,750 versus US $ 18,750 for women. The per capita income was US $ 12,439. About 14.5% of families and 17.9% of the total population lived below the poverty line ; this affected 21.9% of those under 18 and 26.3% of those over 65.
