The Naches River is a tributary of the Yakima River in Yakima and Kittitas counties in central Washington state . Starting as the Little Naches River , it is about 121 km long. After the confluence of the Little Naches and the Bumping River , it becomes the actual Naches River. The Naches River and its tributaries drain part of the east side of the Cascade Range east of Mount Rainier and northeast of Mount Adams . In terms of outflow , the Naches River is the largest tributary of the Yakima River.

In the upper areas the catchment area of the Naches River lies in rugged mountainous landscapes and wilderness areas . The lower Naches River and its tributary, the Tieton River , flow through valleys with small towns and irrigated orchards northwest of Yakima , where the Naches joins the Yakima River. Historically, the river served as a major transport route between the east and west sides of the cascades; both Indians and white settlers came over the Naches Pass .

The name of the river is made up of the Indian words "naugh" (rough or turbulent) and "chez" (water).

course

The Little Naches River starts with multiple springs near Naches Pass and the boundaries of Yakima , Kittitas , Pierce and King counties . The boundary between Yakima Counties and Kittitas Counties follows the Upper Little Naches and Naches Rivers, but most of the drainage basin is in Yakima County. Pierce and King Counties are linked by the watershed between Puget Sound and the Columbia River. The tributaries of the Naches River therefore reach high up to, but not over the border with the Counties Pierce and King.

The Little Naches River begins as the confluence of the North Fork and Middle Fork Little Naches River . After flowing about 32 km to the southeast, the Little Naches River and the Bumping River form the actual Naches River. The catchment area of the Little Naches River also includes the eastern part of the Norse Peak Wilderness , located northeast of Mount Rainier.

The Bumping River begins at its source near the southeast boundary between Mount Rainier National Park and Lewis County . The river flows northeast into Bumping Lake , a natural lake expanded by a dam. Below the dam, the Bumping River flows northeast to its confluence with the Little Naches River . Right before its mouth, the Bumping River takes its main tributary, the American River .

The American River has several headwaters near Chinook Pass on the eastern boundary of Mount Rainier National Park . For most of its course, the American River is accompanied by Washington State Route 410 , which crosses the cascades at Chinook Pass .

Below the confluence of the Little Naches and Bumping River , the Naches River flows southeast through the Nile Valley , where the Nile Creek and Rattlesnake Creek flow into it. The river then reaches the Naches Valley , where it receives its largest tributary, the Tieton River . The Naches Valley is home to the small towns of Naches and Tieton . The valley is full of orchards, where mainly apples grow. Irrigation is ensured through canals from the Tieton and the Naches River.

The Tieton River rises at Rimrock Lake , a reservoir that is in turn fed by several rivers that drain parts of the Goat Rocks Wilderness . The William O. Douglas Wilderness is also part of the Naches River Basin .

Below the tributary of the Tieton River , the Naches River takes on the Cowiche Creek , then it flows eastward along the north side of the city of Yakima and there flows into the Yakima River.

An average of 113 m³ / s was measured as discharge in Naches.

tourism

Much of the Naches River Basin is made up of National Forests and Wilderness Areas ; these include parts of the Wenatchee National Forest , Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and the Gifford Pinchot National Forest as well as parts of the Norse Peak Wilderness , the William O. Douglas Wilderness and the Goat Rocks Wilderness .

The Pacific Crest Trail roughly follows the high-lying watershed of the Cascades and runs along many headwaters in the Naches River Basin .

The White Pass Ski Area is close to the White Pass and the headwaters of the Tieton River .
