Tillamook is a small town and county seat of Tillamook County in the US state of Oregon with 4476 inhabitants (2004).

The city is located at the southeast end of Tillamook Bay on the Pacific Ocean . It was named after the indigenous people of the Tillamook , a Salish tribe .

history

In 1788, under Captain Robert Gray , an American ship anchored in Tillamook Bay for the first time. The settlement of the later town of Tillamook began in 1851. The first shop opened in 1862; from 1866, when a post office was set up, the place was finally called Tillamook. It was elected to the county seat in 1873 and registered as a city in 1891 .

A railway line last operated by the Port of Tillamook Bay Railroad led from Tillamook over the coastal mountains to central Oregon since 1911. This run had to be closed in 2007 after severe storm damage.

The main industry of the place is agriculture. Mainly dairy cattle are kept, which supply the cheese factory.

Tillamook also benefits from passing tourists going to the Pacific.

Tillamook Airport is five kilometers south of the city . At the airfield there is also the Tillamook Air Museum , which is located in the former Blimp Hangar B of the Naval Air Station Tillamook of the US Navy from World War II. The hangar itself is listed on the National Register of Historic Places . Hangar A was destroyed in a fire in 1992.

Tillamook has an area of ​​4.0 km². The settlement area is concentrated in the area between the Trask River , which flows along the city from the southeast, and the Hoquarten Slough, which meanders from east to west .

US Highway 101 runs south on Main Avenue and north on Pacific Avenue through the center of town; Oregon State Route 131 ends at the intersection with 3rd Street coming from Oceanside to the west and begins Oregon State Route 6 , which heads east on US Highway 26 to Portland .

The residents of Tillamooks were distributed to 1768 households out of which 33.3% had children under 18 years of age. 44.7% of households were married, 12.5% ​​had a female head of the household without a husband, and 37.1% were not families. 32.1% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 13.1% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.08.

The population was divided into 29.2% minors, 9.4% 18–24 year olds, 28.1% 25–44 year olds, 19.6% 45–64 year olds and 13.6% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 women there were 96.0 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 92.1 men.

The median household income in Tillamook was 29,875 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 36,351 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 28,458 compared to $ 20,801 for women. The per capita income was $ 15,160. 15.4% of the population and 11.8% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 18.2% of minors and 14.8% of those aged 65 and over.
